Peterson's Score vs CLEP test on Introductory Sociology - jxc5631 - 12-04-2017

I started studying I think on Friday, but studied quite a bit on Saturday, yesterday, and this morning.

I took the first Peterson's prep test in Introductory Sociology and got a 65%. (Edit: I thought this was a passing grade, but I'm not sure? I know that you need to score at least 50 in the real test, but I guess the percentages in the Peterson's prep test is different?) How would that translate when I take the real CLEP test? Is the real test harder or easier than the Peterson's prep test?

I will take the Peterson's prep test 2 more times as well as the REA prep test that I purchased. The goal is to get at least a 70%. I may reschedule to take the test sooner (this Wednesday) because I need the score before a certain date so I can graduate this semester (deadline January 8).

Aiming for 70% is excellent, 65% is probably fine, but you have 2 more available to you, it's worth taking them. The test question bank is big, so rather than looking at just 1 exam, you could do an overall score including all 3 exams and calculate your % that way.

Thank you! I'm currently studying to take the prep test the second time. I'll take a total of 4 prep tests and aim for an average score of 70%. I'll just go take the exam on Wednesday because I can't afford to delay this.

I will contribute to the feedback forum when I am done.

RE: Peterson's Score vs CLEP test on Introductory Sociology - jxc5631 - 12-04-2017

I just took an REA diagnostic test and got a 74%.

60% - Topics where you are the strongest:
Institutions
Social Patterns
Social Processes

40% - Topics you should review:
Social Stratification (Process and Structure)
The Sociological Perspective

0% - Topics where you need the most work:
No topics

0% - Topics you haven’t reviewed:
No topics

Still unsure how that will translate to the real CLEP exam, but I'll review the topics I need work in and I'll do another practice test.

(I'm so nervous about the test! Sad )

When you take any practice test twice, never count the score the second time- it doesn't reflect if your mastery improved, only your recall of those specific questions, and those specific questions WON'T be on the test. Best to find a different test to use.

When you pay for Peterson's, you get 3, so that's where I'd suggest you start. Official Guide can be obtained from your library - Sociology content is showing as the last revision in 2012, so any OFficial Guide published since then should work. USe the guide and practice test in there too. Finally, you can check if Free CLPE Prep site has a practice test (I think they do). All of that will get you very prepared without spending another nickel. Wink

If you want to spend more money, you can get an REA Guide $15 and subscription to Instantcert's flashcards and Specific Exam Feedback folder for $20 (code 100150 for $5 off)

Edit to add: I missed that you already had an REA! Oops, sorry! Let me tell you that in MY opinion, you should over-prepare for your first exam. You want to go in solid. Later, when you're feeling bulletproof, you may end up cutting a few corners, but no harm in knocking your first one out of the park. Wink

Thank you!! The Peterson's prep test as far as I can remember were mixed, meaning the second time that I took it didn't have the exact same questions as the first time. I can't say the same about the Free CLEP Prep test, though, but it helped regardless!

Unfortunately, I have a 64% the second time I took the Peterson's prep test. Sad

Here are the resources I have:
Peterson's Prep Test (65%, 64%)
18th edition 2006? CLEP examination guide (39/54 = 72.22%)
2017 CLEP Examination Guide (haven't taken it yet)
REA Prep test (Diagnostic test = 74%)
Free CLEP Prep (Paid) Practice Site (74%, 82%)

I'll follow your advice!! I'm also going to watch these videos from Crash Course on Youtube:

Thank you! Hopefully, I can share good news on Thursday. Crossing my fingers!

I feel pretty confident that you'll pass, but you have another day, so may as well use it! And yes, please do report back!!!

RE: Peterson's Score vs CLEP test on Introductory Sociology - jxc5631 - 12-07-2017

Thank you!

Here's an update on my practice test scores:

Free CLEP Prep Practice Test: 74%, 82%

Peterson's Online Practice Test: 65%, 64%. I will do the third practice test later, just need a break (Update: 69%)

REA Online Practice Test: Diagnostics - 74% (will retake this), 67%, 80%

2017 CLEP Study Guide Practice Test: 70/88 = 79.545%

Instant Cert Flash Cards - ~90%

I really don't recall which practice tests are harder between REA and Peterson's, although I guess based on the scores, Peterson's is. The CLEP's study guide practice test seemed fairly easy enough and if the real questions are like that, I can pass it. Which practice tests are the most accurate representation of the real CLEP exam?

RE: Peterson's Score vs CLEP test on Introductory Sociology - cookderosa - 12-07-2017

So, today is Thursday! It's always fun to guess....I'll probably be wrong, but I'm going to guess you scored 63.

<holding my breath>
