No-Exam Courses - masrat858 - 09-04-2017

Are there any no-exam self-paced online courses any of us would recommend taking, for GPA boosting purposes?

To boost GPA, you need a grade. To get a grade, you have to take the course through a college. To take a course through a college, you have to filter by those that offer self-paced classes. That set is already small, and then within that set, you'll have to search classes individually for a syllabus to see if there are tests/exams.

MAYBE you could look at the indy courses through BYU? https://is.byu.edu/

Another option are accelerated (8 week) courses through CC's. They may have exams, but are often open-book & open-notes, and most of the ones I took had a paper in lieu of a test that they couldn't oversee.

Are you willing to write a paper? To properly answer your question, since you've specified what you won't do, it would be helpful to know what you are willing to be the basis of your evaluation.

How many semester hours do you have? Suppose you have 30 hours with a 3.0 GPA. You take a 3 hour course and make an A. Your GPA is now 3.0909... Now suppose you have 60 hours with a 3.0 GPA and you take a 3 hour course and make an A. Your GPA is now 3.0476. Want to pull a 3.0 up to a 3.5? You'll need to take as many hours as you've already taken and make an A in every single course. How much do you want to raise your GPA?

Maybe you already understand the GPA calculations, but not everybody does.

I would not take "no-exam" classes at all as most if not every one of them are for audit/non-credit courses or pass/fail without a letter grade. Furthermore, how do you get a grade improvement with these classes!? I mean, without testing your knowledge on the subject matter, how would they know what level you're at. The only probable courses are the ones that are writing intensive (I just hate those). Your best bet is to use all the FREE courses and Shmoop for anything that doesn't require proctoring if you don't like exams...

APUS had no exam courses. They also post a syllabus with the course so you can see. So far I took 3 Intelligence courses and 1 CJ. All writing no exams.

My son is taking 2 classes through CSU Pueblo Independent Study and they are both no exam classes.  I think about 40% of their classes do not have exams.  He is taking Sport Psychology (PSY 205) and it requires 4 3-5 page papers and Intro to Literature(ENG 130) and it requires 10 1-2 page reading response papers and 3 3 page essays.  In my opinion, both of those classes could be done in just a few weeks.  However, he is 18 and is going at his own, very slow, pace!  The requirements for each class is available to look at before you enroll on their website.

Do you have a link to the syllabus?

CSU-Global does not give exams, at least for the courses that I looked into. You have to complete what they call a portfolio - I'm assuming it's very writing intensive, I did not end up taking classes with them, so I can't say for sure.

In general, I would assume that if a course has no exams, there would be a lot of papers instead. Pick your poison.
