Question about proctoring through SL - babypterodactyl - 06-23-2017

I wanted to do a few courses through SL but I am worried I won't be allowed to because I use an external monitor on my laptop. My laptop is tiny, 13", so I plug in a normal monitor to be able to use it like a regular desktop. But they require a webcam. and the webcam is built into my laptop... so I would end up having 2 monitors active. I have heard they don't allow that... I emailed to ask but they did not reply. Does anyone know?

You can go into the display properties and make it so the laptop screen is off, while the monitor is on.

Another possibility is buying an older USB webcam for about $10. Make sure it meets the minimum requirements, of course.

Edit: Also, they may allow you to tape something in front of the laptop monitor, but light would probably show through white paper. It would have to be thicker or darker.

You should talk to proctor u, by calling, not emailing Straighterline as SL has nothing to do with the proctor but provide the exam.
All the exams I've taken required them to check and verify there were NO external monitors. My suggestion, rent/lease a laptop.
You can again, make sure with Proctor U that it's acceptable to use an external monitor as the main screen and nothing else.
Generally that will require you to have an external webcam to display that it's lid has been closed, email/call to confirm.

Why not just unplug the external monitor and take it on the laptop screen? Sure, it's a little small, but for an exam, you could just zoom the text up a bit and be OK.

Respectfully,

I think you are overthinking this.

A thrift store web cam, or simply using the smaller monitor for the test would streamline the process.

If they do approve your dual monitor setup, please report back though, that would be interesting to know.
