SL Business Communications: Length of each quiz? What are the writing assignments? - wandac - 05-17-2017

Considering SL Business Communications for 16-yr-old son to take. I see there are a lot of graded exams, about 15, plus midterm, final, & 3 written assignments.
How many minutes & questions are each of the graded exams?
What are the 3 written assignments? One looks like a resume/cover letter, but I can't tell what the other two are. Can someone share the assignment specifics please?
Would SL or Study.com be the easier path for Business Communications?

This is a "no brainer" for me, I took the course and had 82% on all the exams/midterm/final together.
Then I did the assignments (yes, after the final). First assignment is a 1-2 page inquiry letter, not a resume
I received a 97% on that assignment as Turnitin found 0% and I guess the grader liked what he/she read.

Second assignment is a 750 worded Letter Report, I had 92% on it and Turnitin found 7% (that's because of the quotes-paraphrases).
Final assignment is a 1200-1500 worded Short Report, I also had 92% on it and Turnitin found 13% as I had "more quotes-paraphrase).
All in all, I liked my course at Straighterline. The final was what kind of dropped my score as it was closed book and had a letter component.

I am currently doing the course through Study.com. A lot of the quizzes are common sense, but may not be as obvious for a 16-year-old. I don't think they would be difficult though. The projects and grading seem very reasonable so far - I have done the short memo, and the cover letter/resume. I received a grade that was equal to the effort I put into them. The thing I like is that if I somehow bomb the final, I can always go back and adjust my projects to receive a better grade on them. I currently have 47/60 on the projects and if I get another 25-30 points on the business report (out of 40 points), I will only need a 35-40% on the final. The course does have a decent amount of quizzes, but I had about 20% done from overlap of other courses. I haven't found anything to be difficult yet and I think it's a good course so far.

Does Saylor's Corporate Communication transfer to the program you are looking into? My son took that one and enjoyed it - and you can't beat $25. It transferred in as Business Communications at WGU.

I would recommend taking this course right afterwards as well. They come in both as upper level and won't duplicate each other.
I also say it's unbeatable at $25/3 credits... darn cheap (even cheaper than a Davar course on sale!)

Current EPC is TESU, unless TESU's Strategic Management morphs into something my son can't complete. Not sure if the Saylor course meets the TESU Business Communications requirement or not. How long did it take your son to complete Saylor's Corporate Communication?

Ah, didn't realize there is a closed book final for SL Business Communications. I should have checked that.
I wondered about the length of the quizzes, since there are so many of them.

Just going to throw my 2 cents in here.. I think the best option for this course highly depends on the person taking it.. I chose SL simply because I was burnt out on doing all my courses with study.com. I found SL to be less stressful in the sense that I am a better writer than test taker. When I first looked at that course with SL I thought it would be tedious i can say it was a lot of work but actually not as bad as I thought it would be. I was able to complete it in 3 days without any issue.. The grading took awhile for the papers but from the quizzes and a few papers that were graded along with the final I had easily passed before everything was graded.. I would say depending on your child's study style which course is best may depend on that..

He spent about 2 weeks on it, but this was his first foray into online alternative courses. He probably spent an hour or so a day reading the material and then 2 hours studying the day before the final. He did this while he was still doing community college full time.
