You have to take the final no matter what - but depending on the course, you don't need to score any points on the final. Most courses have finals worth 20 to 30%, and you need a 70% total to pass - so if you get close to 100% on the tests, you can bomb the final and still pass with a decent grade.

No, you have to finish all exams, midterm, finals (and if you have courses that have assignments that are marked, you have to complete them).
Your final grade after doing all of those has to equal 69.6% or higher (as they do rounding up), but yes, 70% or higher is when you get credit.
It doesn't matter how well you did in each, it all depends how they add up cumulatively to 70% or higher.
Most classes if you score high enough, you can pass the course without even worrying about the final.

Okay, thanks. I guess I misunderstood. I'm only 2 quizzes in (Sociology 101) and got a 100% and 87%. I guess as I reach the final I'll see what the grade is I need to get in order to pass.
I'm not yet in the swing of test taking again (after all these years) so it's definitely not easy - but I'm starting to make out some patterns of what will be asked and what I will need to know. Hopefully I'll get better at identifying that than anything else. As with schooling entirely, it always seems to reward people who understand the strategy of test taking vs. those who really understand the material but don't hone in on what will become important or how it will be asked.

For several classes that I've taken at SL, they break down like this:
Quiz 1: 125
Quiz 2: 125
Midterm: 250
Quiz 3: 125
Quiz 4: 125
Final: 250
You need 70% to pass, so out of the 1000 points, you need 700 minimum. As you can see, it's theoretically possible to get 750 before even requesting the proctored final, but you must take the final (you could just click through it).
Soc101 is a different animal than that scoring system, but your tests should show how many points are possible and how many you got. The course is still based on 1000 points and you need 700 to pass.
