TESU one PLA course? - Ideas - 04-18-2017

I was reading older posts, and someone said that you could take PLA-100 only, if you were going to get PLA for one course only (up to 3 credits).

Is that still true, that you could do a single PLA?

So how much does it come to for the 3 credits, if that route is available?

Normally I wouldn't be considering PLA due to the cost and effort, but the Biology lab course costs so much. In addition the course fee, there's the lab kit cost which can be $200 and up. Also, because it's hard to find a separate lab-only course, and I'd probably end up having to do all 4 Biology credits again. (This is for ASNSM where you need Bio II not just Bio I.)

Also I'm just curious.

You don't necessarily need to take the PLA-100. It's recommended if you would like to try your hand at Prior Learning Assessments.
That PLA-100 course I think is only 1 credit. It is also a waste of $ for only 3 credits as they charge you a set fee for up to 12 credits.

Update: Ouch! I just looked at the webpage, they've updated the requirements and now it's much more expensive.
https://www.tesu.edu/tuition/pla-tuition.cfm

Before, there was no need to take the PLA-100 and PLA-200, now it's a requirement (sigh). I wonder if you can appeal/get exempted for it.
Anyways, up to 12 credits is $389 and if you need an additional 6 credits, it's $221 for 6 and subsequent 6 credits.

Where does it say that PLA-100 and PLA-200 are required? The page gives you the tuition and fees for the single course option (does not require PLA-200) and for the other option that requires PLA-200. Those two options have always existed, but there is nothing on the page that says that the waiver for PLA-200 is no longer available.

I don't think TESU will let you do a portfolio for a lab. I believed I asked before. I ended up taking biology II with lab at NMJC.

Portfolio Assessment fees (Upon completion of the PLA-200 course)
Assessment of up to 12 credits registered in a semester: $389
Assessment of additional 6 credits registered in a semester: $221
(Portfolios are not registered until completed and uploaded, and registration is requested through the PLA office)

Might have been me, but when I saw that earlier, "Upon completion of the PLA-200" wasn't there last year.
I don't know, there may have been a change to their webpage now that you have to complete the PLA 200 from them.
If that's the case, it'll be more expensive than the previous year as that requirement didn't exist.

It could have just been put there for clarification. If someone wants to know whether or not PLA-200 can be waived by taking an introductory PLA course at another school or having been awarded credit for a PLA at another school, then he or she can contact Marc Singer. I would avoid Todd Siben. Since the OP is interested in the single course option, then the OP wouldn't have to worry about it. However, I doubt TESU will let anyone PLA a lab course unless that person has extensive experience doing lab work.

I am going through PLA200 right now.

Via my counselor and Todd Siben, you cannot offer a portfolio without taking and passing PLA200.

You cannot sub any other places' PLA200 for TESU PLA200.

You cannot offer a portfolio for review with only PLA100.

PLA100 may not be required, I took Kaplan's course.

The feeling I am getting is that portfolio credit is going to be a serious trial.

SL offers bio one lab standalone. Dunno about a bio II lab though

I wonder if you could change mid-stream?

I have concerns about retribution.

Marc Singer, who is above Todd, has explicitly told us otherwise. Todd always gives bad information.

In fact Saylor, through their TESU partnership, offers the TESU PLA100/200 course material for free so you can figure out what they're looking for, and then submit a portfolio. The course material is directly from TESU.

PLA and Portfolio Help

Quote:Are there guidelines for putting together my portfolio?

Yes! Those guidelines are part of what you will learn by taking the 2-credit PLA-200 Introduction to Portfolio Development course that is offered. Additionally, the PLA-200 course will guide you through the administrative and operational steps in the portfolio process. Without these you cannot submit portfolios for assessment.

I feel pretty confident in that you can't use PLA100 to submit. And, I feel pretty confident you can't do it without passing PLA200. But if your link is telling me I could have taken it through saylor for free, I am in this course over a thousand dollars. I feel like that's borderline fraudulent misrepresentation.

I wonder how the course would even work through saylor. Would you have a person to submit the work to?

This whole thing has been exceptionally frustrating.

I would talk to Marc, bring up the Saylor partnership and open course specifically.
