The CLEP registration says the essay portion is optional, great! But is the exam worth 6 credits without it? I mean, I'd rather not write an essay but I also don't want to have to study for another separate exam to get another 3 credits.

Yes, the exam is worth 6 credits without the essay (at least at TESU it is).
