Hello everyone
I am new to the forum and I want to know besides instant cert did you have to purchase textbook materials in order to pass the clep exams and the Tecep exams? Also for courses like straight liner and uexcel courses what material did you have to purchase to study?

It depends who you ask, which exams you're talking about and how good you are at carefully reading questions and at least being able to eliminate wrong answers. Personally I used the Instantcert only for the majority of CLEP & UEXCEL exams I took. The exception was the Math CLEP and I should have used more for the Intro to Finance UEXCEL as I failed it (well I got a D, so as good as failed).

I used the texts from the TESU TCEP exam description. Rented some of them from Amazon (not a shameless plug, I didn't work for them then!), bought some I wanted to keep and used digital copies of others.

InstantCert or other test prep resources can be enough if you already have a decent grasp of the material. If you're coming at a brand new subject, I think you need a textbook.

Here's my rule for getting advice online: Don't believe anything anybody tells you, including me. The people who give advice don't have to live with the consequences of bad decisions you make from believing the advice.

Everybody is different. Get the opinions of many and synthesize what is right for you. For social sciences including history, the CLEP prep books published by REA have been very effective for many people, sometimes the only preparation. If you can cram from reading a book, buy them. If you learn better from watching videos, maybe you should do something else.

If you want to pass the CLEP Biology exam and don't want to waste your time overstudying, you should consider my links: http://www.degreeforum.net/general-education-testing-discussion/16222-wikipedia-links-clep-biology.html

It totally depends - on the exam, on how well you know the material, on how good of a test-taker you are, etc.

I could pass Intro to Business without spending one second studying, but I'm sure I would fail any science exam without a lot of studying by one means or another.
