BALS Humanities concentration: help me decipher the requirements? - Notgodot - 12-09-2016

Hi all, I'm trying to wrap my head around the requirements for the Humanities concentration. Here's what the website says:

Quote:Students complete 30 credits in the area of study that include at least 15 credits at the 300/400 level and no more than 6 credits at the 100 level. This will include 18 credits of Humanities courses and an additional 12 credits of Liberal Studies courses.

So, tell me if I've got this right:

A. 18cr Humanities credits and 12cr Lib Studies credits
B. 6cr can be 100 level of either Humanities or Lib Studies
C. 15cr must be 300/400 level of either Humanities or Lib Studies

Because I can also read this as:

A. 18cr Humanities credits and 12cr Lib Studies credits
B. 6cr can be 100 level of Humanities only
C. 15cr must be 300/400 level of Humanities only

...but then that would mean 21cr of Humanities was required, so maybe it's:

A. 18cr Humanities credits and 12cr Lib Studies credits
B. 6cr can be 100 level of either Humanities or Lib Studies
C. 15cr must be 300/400 level of Humanities only

What do you think?

Sorry, found the answer:

Quote:The Area of Study for this degree program consists of the 18 semester hour Concentration, the 12 semester hour Liberal Studies General Courses and the 3 semester hour Liberal Arts Capstone, for a total of 33 semester hours. A MAXIMUM of 6 semester hours within the entire Area of Study can be at the 100 level. Within the Concentration, complete 15 semester hours in the Humanities at the upper level (300/400) with a grade of C or better. Complete an additional 3 semester hours in the Humanities at any level with a grade o f C or better.

So from what I can tell, these are the classifications that count as Humanities: (Please correct me if I'm wrong)

ART - art
COM - communications
ENG - English
ETH - ethics
FIL - film
HUM - humanities
JOU - journalism
LIB - ?
LIT - literature

In addition, TESU accepts the following specific courses as Humanities:

Managerial Communications (MAN-373 TECEP/course)(Saylor.org BUS 210 Corporate Communication transfers as COM-373 = same?)
Leadership Communications (MAN-376 course)
Marketing Communications (MAR-321-TE TECEP)

Humanities also includes philosophy, music, religion, photography, foreign language, general humanities and similar studies. There are proficiency exams offered for some foreign languages and some award a large number of credits.

These are all UL COM courses, even if they don't have COM as their course number.

The Managerial Comm TECEP and Saylor Corp Comm courses are duplicates of each other. BUT, Business Comm from SL or Study.com is counted as COM-300 and should not duplicate.

So, for online upper level options, we've got:

1. Corporate Communication (Saylor)
2. Business Ethics (Study.com)
3. Business Communication (Study.com)
4. Marketing Communications (TECEP)
5. ...
I hope one of the new Shmoop literature courses transfers in as upper level!

I believe Study.com has Advanced Tech Writing that should come in as upper level. Straighterline also has a Religion course that I believe is upper level at TESU.

Advanced Technical Writing only transfers in as ENG-201 : Technical Writing at TESU. Apparently they don't feel it's advanced enough?

None of the Shmoop Lit courses is UL per ACE, so TESU will get to do with those what they want. I wouldn't count on them being UL, although if you need to take Lit courses anyway, and you're going to pay $85 for a month, it certainly can't hurt to try a few and see what happens.

UExcel has Bioethics that comes in as PHI-475 as is only around $150. Ethics: Theory & Practice and Interpersonal Comm are also UL, but closer to $350 each.

SL's Intro to Religion comes in as REL-405, but Study.com's Intro to World Religions comes in as REL-277. You could probably use the study.com one to study for the SL course and do both.

TCC has Principles of Moral Development I & II for about $220 each.

CSU-Global is $250/course, and has a ton of UL Comm courses.
