Cheapest Straigherline partner? - pluggingalong - 10-01-2016
I was wondering if anyone knows what the cheapest online partner for SL is, for a Gen-Ed or IT degree? I was thinking if I went to SL to get most of the credits, then switched to a partner, which would be the cheapest for an out-of-state student. This assumes I did not get credits any other way, except SL.

Have you looked at the Big 3 and WGU. I believe all four of them are partners with Straighterline...

Update: Curiosity got the best of me, I skimmed down that list and Patten is a partner!
They're the cheapest option, but it maybe better to go with the Big 3 or WGU.

Other than the Big 3 (Thomas Edison State University, Charter Oak State College, and Excelsior College), you cannot complete a degree only using SL courses. Most schools will have a 25% residency requirement, which will mean that about 30 credits will have to be completed as online or on-campus courses with that school. The competency-based schools, such as Patten and Western Governors University, will probably be the cheapest, but I have not heard good things about Patten from the members of this forum.

I actually went to WGU briefly, but I was too much of a perfectionist on the tests. It was taking me 3x longer to take the tests, and I was going to graduate in 12 years. Then I went to NAU PL briefly, but was overwhelmed with the number of essays I had to write (where I was also a perfectionist). I felt like, maybe I should take as many classes as I could at SL, then transfer to the cheapest school possible to finish the degree. I want to work at my own pace, but have a mixture of tests and essays (like a regular school). Or maybe I should just try to make something I can sell, instead of trying to improve the product of me.

I saw your previous thread with your COSC cybersecurity eval.
If you are looking at an IT degree, you may be better off with WGU with the IT certs included for "free" with your tuition. But you need to have the ability to finish your remaining ~35 CU within 6 months, which is a fast pace that many can't do. If you need two or more terms, WGU may turn out to be very expensive. Your speed in taking SL courses is an indication if WGU in one term is realistic or not. I think you might have the background to not get slowed down by the IT courses. There is a transfer eval webpage for WGU you should look at to plan your credits. Remember you must transfer your credits prior to enrolling. They won't take transfer credits after you start your first term at WGU.

My 16 year old son is currently taking courses at Straighterline and will transfer to WGU. He should be able to complete his BS degree in 2 terms for a total of $6,000. Using the American Opportunity Tax Credit will bring his total tuition down to around $1800, not counting the money spent at Straighterline. With Straighterline, he is choosing his courses, reading all the texts ahead of time, and then blowing through courses as quickly as possible while his membership is active. He signed up last Monday and finished his third course today. After this month, he'll cancel, pre-read 4 or 5 more texts, and do that all over again.
