Hello all,
I am new to this forum and I am looking into enrolling at Excelsior College. Do employers take a degree from Excelsior serious? I'm asking because of the fact that you are allowed to test out of a degree, without doing any coursework. Please do not get me wrong. I am NOT bashing the college at all. I'm just curious. Thanks for any info.

My current employer is a big name Fortune 500 company and they see it as any other legally accredited degree. It is in HR's accredited degree database, so it gets the green light. Same with nationally accredited degrees. Degree? Check mark.

It's a regionally accredited school, which is all that should matter. The fact that it is recognized by the armed forces (and one can commission with it) is my litmus test that a school is legit, but I suppose private organizations might still turn their noses up at non-traditional schools.
If you are concerned about your employer's opinion of the school, why not list it on your resume/cv as:
Bachelor of Science in (degree here) - University of the State of New York, Excelsior
...or something to that effect. That way it conveys to the employer that Excelsior is part of a legitimate university system.

can you do that? isnt that a little misleading? I mean I like the idea and it looks WAY better than Excelsior college and i am probably going to list it on my resume now but still i though that excelsior college is now separate and independent?

[SIZE="2"][COLOR="Navy"]Here's the thing - I believe that all NY schools, including High Schools are accredited members of the Regents of the USNY which is in and of itself a State of NY accreditor. In fact the USNY is so strong, some major NY colleges are not members of any RA or NA accreditors.
My High School (Hicksville, NY) gives a diploma that is stamped from USNY. So EC is a "member" of the USNY but not SUNY.
I went to SUNY-Farmingdale which is a member of....wait for it......USNY (just like EC). Bottom line is that when you graduate you will be an EC grad and not a USNY grad.

Excelsior is RA and that is what counts. I teach at a college and it requires a degree. The degree has to be from a school that is RA or NA. Preferbly RA. I have had no problems with my degree from Excelsior and highly recommend the school.

I will likely list mine as University of the State of New York, Excelsior College. In my mind there are a couple of factors to consider. For me, I'm old, so it'll be at the bottom of my resume anyway. Although I grew up in NY as did Brian [Schenectady--not exactly neighbors but near SUNY (State University of New York) Albany] I now live in California, and "Excelsior College" looks a little lonely all by itself and since we don't have a football or basketball team--lacks name recognition--particularly in CA. Since my early education and work exp. is in NY, I will not list the year I graduate. That way, to the untrained eye, it'll appear that I went to college before moving out to CA. To be clear, I would always (and proudly) tell the whole story to anyone who is interested, but most would be more interested in my work history and I view this entry in my resume as an area to which I would not want to draw undue attention. Therefore, I view having something about the State of NY as being helpful to answering questions before they are asked. Finally, someone must have had a sense of humor when they created the University of the State of NY (USNY) and the State University of NY (SUNY) systems!
