COSC ENG 101 & ENG 102 (Straighterline) - AwardTour - 07-22-2016

Hello,

I noticed on the Straighterline course equivalency page for COSC that they now have their English Composition II class equaling COSC ENG 102. The old/standard advice on degreeforum was to take SL English Composition I and then take the DSST Technical Writing to fulfill the COSC Written Communication Requirements.

It now appears that all COSC English requirements can be completed at straighterline. My actual goal is to avoid CLEP and DSST exams as much as possible. Here is the link Charter Oak State College Course Equivalency Guide | StraighterLine

To recap:
To complete the Written Communications requirements there used to be 2 camps, those who take SL English Composition I with the DSST Technical Writing. The second camp would prefer to take the English Composition CLEP with essay. Now there appears to be a third possibility done completely through Straighterline using ENG Comp I and ENG Comp II.

I am just looking for thoughts or to hear from anyone who has already taken this path. Maybe I am wrong and this has always been possible? I should have saved a copy of the site offline but I remember the Straighterline site being more confusing in the past by showing ENG I & II equaling COSC ENG 101. Now they clearly list the COSC class equivalent.

Thanks.

The main thing is to find what works for you. If you have found that Straighterline works for you, that's great! Just remember the 90 credit cap from a single source rule. Study.com is somewhat similar in its approach and offers COSC upper level classes, if you need a source for your other 24 credits. Cornerstone and Capstone have to come from COSC.

In the past, I think most people took the CLEP College Composition to take care of both requirements in one fell swoop, but now there are more options- CLEP, SL, TECEPs, AP, UExcels, even Penn Foster or (gasp) your local community college.

However, some people already have Comp I and need Comp II. They could take either a Comp II or a Technical Writing course. Thus the range of ways to fulfill those credits.

Thanks for the reply KayV,

My question and reason for this post is basically to confirm that being able to take SL Comp II in place of the Technical Writing DSST is a new thing. I think the old SL website did not list this as a possibility. Has this always been possible or is this something new? I guess I could contact SL but I figured someone here might already have some personal experience with this.

How on earth did I miss your earlier post about an associate degree? Smile
Your plan looks fine.
Here's a thread with some current COSC degree plans:

Thanks for taking a look at my plan KayV,I appreciate it. I am going to modify it to include SL ENG 102 in place of DSST Technical Writing after I get further confirmation/feedback.

It's not new.

It was as KayV said: if you already had English I taken care of, then taking the CLEP would duplicate credits, and there wasn't a great way to take English II. Plus, the Tech Writing DSST was an easy exam.

The SL course is not as cheap as a DSST, and it's a lot more work: 18 quizzes/exams and 7 writing assignments, a book to read (Frankenstein), and then you have to wait for your writing assignments to get graded.

I personally took the English Comp II TECEP, it was easy and no studying required. The SL just seemed like way too much work to me.

It has always been this way as far as I know. SL English Comp 2 has always been accepted that way by COSC, its just that most here find the DSST Tech Writing quicker and easier, not everyone is like that though and it's good to have choices! Smile

Thanks rebel100 and dfecore,

I realize that I am in a very small minority here by wanting to take SL English Comp II over the DSST Technical Writing. Thanks for helping me confirm that it will work. I don't think the SL website made it clear in the past but now it is. Thanks.

Nothing wrong with that, I have a local friend I'm helping who sort of tried everything (CLEP,DSST,SL, PF, CSU-Pueblo) and she came away much prefering SL...so she has taken a bunch...whatever works for YOU is best for YOU....always.

I'm part of that minority as well, haha ... I believe taking a course is much better in learning the material than just going for an exam after a cram study session.
