I found lately, that the tv show ratings are basically worthless. I watch tv with my family, and my dd is a teen. I'm not oblivious to the fact that she is fully aware of sex and sexual situations. Regardless, as much as I want to treat her as an adult, I have zero desire to watch sex scenes with my children. It is getting more difficult these days. Even shows with a family rating will be a commercials that seem to be more mature than the content of the show. Is anyone aware of a secular website where I can view episode guides that explains content?

Regarding commercials; this is not a TV issue, but a movie one. I took my dd (13) to the movies to see "If I Stay", and while it was maudlin, and had mature content, it wasn't too terrible. It got us talking a lot about sex and relationships and stuff like that, and actually turned out to be pretty beneficial (my kid is not normally a feeling-sharer).
BUT, the previews for that movie were HORRENDOUS! Torture-type horror flicks (think "Saw"), truly awful. She likes Supernatural, The Walking Dead, The Originals - so she's not super squeamish or anything. But during those previews, she told me "I'm going to have nightmares tonight!" A couple of weeks later, we went to see a different movie with my dh & ds, and it was Disney or Pixar or something, and honestly, the previews could not have been more wholesome. It was crazy how different those previews were between the two movies.
Ever since then, we try to avoid getting to the movies until just when they're going to start, so we can skip the previews. I think she is still a little shell-shocked by that whole thing. I know I am!

If there is a sex scene, then there should be a code for sexual content. Even though something is rated TV-14, there can be additional codes for language, violence, nudity, and sexual content. I think commercials are played based on time of day a lot of the time.

Still, I should have probably been a little more clear, as I didn't explain fully. We actually "unplugged" recently and have amazon prime and hulu accounts. It seems ALL the shows except for maybe the absolute children's content (think Barney) have really strong adult themes. Again, I'm not a prude and I'm a realist. I remember middle school for myself and the sexually charged conversations children have. I am fully aware that my daughter knows all of the situations in the programs. Still, I as her father DO NOT want to watch these scenes with her. Many a tv night is ruined with completely unnecessary and gratuitous scenes which are more and more teetering on full porn. Then I watch something with a TV-14 rating, and still, the commercial played is a sexually laced expletive marathon, which anyone who watches hulu knows you'll see that commercial at least 6 more times during the program. I even watched a south park episode with my daughter that I had seen before and knew was "clean". Didn't matter, the commercial on was for Adam&Eve, a sex toy website.
I'm just glad we're a busy family and don't watch much television anyway.

You're right- I have a good specific example in mind. I watched the pilot for a show called How to Get Away with Murder. Two of my sons (17 and 21 at the time) watched it too. It's rated TV14. I loved the pilot. Seriously my kind of show- my oldest started watching it too. Our family uses our computers to watch tv (usually through hulu) so frequently in separate places at separate times.
Holy porno Batman. I can't remember the episode number, but it was early on- maybe 3 or 4, was full front of a man completely nude. The front of his groin was covered by the back of a man's head performing oral sex. Excuse me?! I looked up TV14 and it says this:
Parents Strongly Cautioned
This program contains some material that many parents would find unsuitable for children under 14 years of age. Parents are strongly urged to exercise greater care in monitoring this program and are cautioned against letting children under the age of 14 watch unattended. This program may contain one or more of the following: intensely suggestive dialogue (D), strong coarse language (L), intense sexual situations (S), or intense violence (V).
So, apparently intense sexual situations are included, and acceptable as long as you're 15. OMG

I like to use IMDb - Movies, TV and Celebrities - IMDb
You can search for a movie or a series. Scroll past the cast & storyline and there is a section that shows the rating and the parents guide. You can click there on the content advisory. I like that it simply spells out what the content is and you can decide from there, not just relying on a ratings system.
I wish there was a similar resource for books.

PluggedIn.com is a great place for honest reviews...they tell you everything on there that could be offensive in even the slightest way. It's a site started by Christians and is geared toward parents who care what they and their children watch. Not every single movie is gonna be on there but still very valuable. Very highly recommend it...

Does your cable provider or internet provider have a PVR included in your subscription monthly charge?
Some do I think, or you can get a device (any cheapo PVR type of device will do) and save the show for viewing later.
