BA degree in ?? need help - rockbust - 05-08-2016

Hi all,

I went into the military back in late 70's. also did a few community college classes in the 80's. enrolled in TESU back in 2001 for a semester.

I really need to get my BA degree since I have been wanting it for over 30 years. lol "the fast track"
Most of my credits (about 67) are from the military in electronics. about half of those are really UL credits. When I enrolled in TESU they did approve some credit transfer but they did say I needed to have many of them verified by teleconference before degree award because they were over 10 years old.

I am 55 years old and while I have worked in the electronics field for a bit, I could not give a dam about learning anymore electronics or taking more UL classes in elect. But in the same breath it would seem I am pretty close to a BA in some form of electr therefore I would stick to it if it was close. When I applied to TESU I still needed to complete a bunch of UL classes and a bunch of Math classes also. It didnt seem like something that I was that close to. I am also approved for both Pell and Tap (NY) grant.

so my concerns are: what degree would make use of the most of my credits while still being easy to complete?
I am able to get money from pell and Tap so I am thinking hard about excelsior. if I did need to take online courses there they would be paid for..

Excelsior has a BA in Tech Management that allows 45 credits in the free electives area plus 15 electronics cr in the concentration. That would leave 30 core credits . can the core credits be tested out of??
Excelsior's BA in tech is more flexible in the core but requires 60 cr in the arts and science comp and only 15 free electives.
Excelsior's BA in electronics engineering tech would require 24 credits from math / natural sciences. It seems I would still need about 5 courses in the core based on course description.

here is what I have so far:

English comp 2 (TECEP) 3cr

TESU's BSAST degrees only require 12 UL credits. Three of those credits are covered by the Current Trends and Applications capstone. Another three of those credits are covered by the project management requirement, which you can fulfill with a Sophia Learning course that is self-paced. You can test out of the other 6 UL credits if you don't already have them.

You're going to need 30 UL credits at Excelsior, but at least you'll qualify for TAP. Excelsior is similar to TESU for time limits on credits. For their technology degrees, their time limit is 10 years on electronics courses. Their BS in Liberal Arts is pretty flexible if you don't mind having that degree.

I'd recommend the RBA program at WVU Tech. Age of credits doesn't seem to be an issue when I went through an evaluation. I would have them do an evaluation including the big 3. Since you have access to PELL , their tuition is $288 per credit without a math requirement. They have an AoE in Information Studies which requires 15 UL credits. Getting it Done - Degree Requirements | WVU Tech Regents BA | WVU Tech

i believe they will also do an unofficial evaluation without needing to buy and mail them transcripts. WVUP did that with my transcripts. I simply emailed them unofficial transcripts. It took them 48 hours to give me an update.

My advice is to take your time selecting the best plan -you've waited this long, what's another month?

In cases like yours (and mine when I first started in 2006) bringing in credit can blind you to the fastest path. Now, if all of your credits were liberal arts, this would be a no-brainer...but they're not, they're tech credits. In my case they were culinary, but the same idea: non-liberal arts.

So, when people have a lot of specialized credit, they wrongly (IMO) look for the program that takes the most credit. The flaw in that thinking is that it's all about what you have LEFT to complete, and some of the degrees are exceptionally expensive and require a lot of careful planning. In some cases, it's EASIER and CHEAPER to re-do credit that counts in a different degree than trying to scratch together a plan that first insists on using all your existing credit.

If a program awards you 50% of your degree using credit you already earn, you STILL have 60 credits to complete- how you fill those last 60 is the key here. My advice is to keep reading the archives and exploring all of the big 3 (or realistically TESU and EC) and doing scenarios on paper. Work out exactly how you'd fill each requirement and the cost. Using Pell is great, but you have to take classes, which may or may not be something you want to do. 30 classroom credits takes a year. 30 test credits can take 2 months.

I'm sorry I don't have a specific degree plan suggestion, but others here do, and you'll get good advice. My advice is to find the path of least resistance.

I agree with Jennifer that testing can be much faster. the few TECEP tests I took were pretty easy. As Sanantone stated there are ways to satisfy a course that I am not aware of.

looks like WVU requires 24 credits to be taken in WV?

Thank you for the reply. Anyone have advice for degrees with the path of least resistance? I would like to test out where possible. I found the 3 tecep tests easy peasy.

Yes they require 24 online credits taken at any WV school and one at the college you're attending. If your goal was to use some PELL that's an opportunity. If the goal is to test out only, then the Big 3 work great. You can email them a transcript they will do an unofficial evaluation.

thanks.. are you talking about tesu BSAST in Technical Studies? this seems like a good degree for me. based on what I have can you offer a few testing out examples besides the project management course.
