so I was thinking about trying to make a mobile app to help people learn some of the words that appear most often on the SAT
but of course that brings up the problem, where do I get this list of words ?
it's easy to find a list
there are 1000s listed on google

but I would guess most of these lists are copyrighted
for example:

which seems like it might be a paid advertisement from Kaplan
so if I wanted to use a word list on a mobile app (and charge for the app or give it away for free, but with advertisements) anybody have any idea on copyright ?
are the SAT vocabulary lists copyrighted ?
I mean, how is this NOT a violation of copyright

I would hate to make an app and then get a copyright violation levied against it

you can't copyright common usage and language. You'll be in trouble if you use the same exact list as a book, but I can't see how someone could sue you for basically making a dictionary if you put it in your own words.

Checkout Magoosh Vocabulary Builder.
It is a flash card vocab builder/game for GRE, SAT and TOEFL words, as well as general English. You can even challenge others in competition.
