Credit experts--Has anyone taken CLEP/DSST exams for credit at SNHU? - charmander88 - 08-14-2015

Howdy!

I'm currently enrolled at SNHU working on my 2nd term. I transferred with <30 credits from a JC. I found this lovely forum and read about some students who were disappointed by SNHU's verbal promises for Credit by examination. Long story short I've decided on a major. Now I can't find the equivalent exam PDFs on SNHU's site. I am weary of spending the time + $ for exams without written confirmation of their acceptance policy.

They said they will be working on the issue. I have a printed copy of the documents from the Registrar's office months ago. But registration for next term is looming...Does anyone have experience or advice to help a sister out?
Thank you for reading,
Charmander88

email them and ask them to attach it to your email. One thing I can promise you, it IS WRITTEN DOWN, colleges don't just wing it. Call and email hourly until it arrives.

Thanks for your reply Cookderosa! I can tell from lurking the past few months that you know your stuff. Smile I am waiting to hear back from them for another copy of the file. I guess my concern is will that chart of equivalents be binding? Or is it possible that these exams might get denied credit after the fact? I'm familiar with catalog rights at colleges (where students are entitled to their starting year's catalog rights)--Does any have firsthand experience or direction for where I can research this further?

Charmander,

I hate to say it, but SNHU is a non profit ran as a for profit. Look up my old posts on SNHU, they say one thing and do another. They promised they would accept all these credits and never did. Another member warned me before I made a bad decision.

Hi Prioko! Thank you SO MUCH for letting me known about your experience. I haven't taken a CLEP or DSST exam yet, though I have been studying the InstantCert cards so I'd like to soon.
My concern is that like you, I have been toid they take 90 units--30 of which can be credit by examination--And one person at either the Registrar or an Advisor told me that DSST exams come out of that remaining 60 units, basically implying I could take ~60 units work of DSST exams and apply that towards my degree.
Stories like your's make me suspicious of those claims. I'm sure you did your due diligence in research and whatnot. Do you mind sharing if they told you the same thing or a similiar claim for the limit?

(I've done some reading on here and found posts by you, and two other members: Yonks and Tedium--I think it was--but these posts are all well over a year old.) I'm loosely planning on emailing my proposed CBE credits I plan to take + the 12 courses I need to take in-house. My hope is that if I have a written verification that an Advisor/Registrar employee has approved my plan they'll have to grant the credit. Am I being naive/too much of an idealist in this plan?

Thank you for sharing! ^_^

charmander,

I was seriously considering SNHU until I wS warned here. When I had contacted the school, it was true. Although the school says you can transfer in 90 credits, SNHU considers CLEP prior learning credit which is capped at 15 SH, so I could only transfer in 15 credits when I already had something in the ballpark of 30 at the time. Now that was about two years ago, so things might have changed so make sure you double check.

I was able to transfer in 90 credits and only complete 30 at SNHU. I'm graduating this May. Most of those 90 credits came from CLEP, DSST, Straighterline, etc. You just need to know the rules and defend your stance on only taking the 30 credits to graduate. My advisor was a bit worried about my plan, thinking it was too much work to do courses and pass the CLEPs and other tests at the same time, but once he realized I was doing it, and at a pretty fast paced, he backed off and supported me on doing the degree my way. Everyone at SNHU has been incredibly helpful and I'm almost done thanks to their very generous transfer policy. I'm finally finishing a degree I started almost 20 years ago.

Zombie thread!

But it's nice to hear success stories, even from the schools who have priced themselves out of the sweet spot of this forum.

If you made it work for you despite other's negative experiences, that's great!

However, we sure should be weary of SNHU's social media/marketing team bringing up old internet posts for no reason Wink

Yep, a classic "Night of the Living Thread". If this is correct, that is great that SNHU finally practiced what they preached. I still think there's better options for the money, but to each his/her own.
