FINISHED ALEKS INTRO TO STATS!!! Yip Yip! Hooray!! - cypster - 11-01-2014

I guess I should add "Finally finished" to that title.. Lol. I read all of the awesome post about others finishing in a day while watching television and with my Calculus background, I just knew I had this one in the bag, especially after knocking out ALEKS algebra in a couple hours... And then life happened! smh... So much has happened with everything ranging from my mom getting really ill to other personal challenges and struggles and a promotion at a job that I really like but one that I know I need to grow away from. So here I am almost a year later and finally finished.

I can't explain how glad I am to have the ALEKS journey behind me. I really encourage anyone who needs Statistics to think long and hard before trying to do it in ALEKS. What should have been a $20 stint has err "blossomed" into almost $300 now because of unexpected things. I'm not saying it isn't a great option (after all where are you going to be able to get 3 statistics credits for $300?), just make sure you pass the assesment on the first try! If you don't, there are some iron curtains that fall behind you and seal you in a dark cold dungeon. Lol. jk. Good luck to all and be sure to check out all the awesome posts in this forum from others with tips for moving forward with your goals and stay tuned in the weeks and months ahead as I try to get back on track with my goals to finish up my degree or degrees. Thanks for checking out my post. Smile

Congrats crypster!!

I actually just formally enrolled with ALEKS yesterday (31Oct2014). Intro to Statistics is the primary class that I need to pass. I've also read some other forum posts that somewhat echo what you mentioned. I was originally planning on taking a CLEP exam to receive this credit.

Since it has almost been 20 years since I have been in a formal math class situation, I decided it may be best to take a step back and go through the College Algebra ALEKS (since I can receive 3 credits for it as well). Also contemplating on taking the PreCalculus ALEKS class as that is one that will also provide another 3 credit hours and perhaps better prepare me for the Intro to Stats ALEKS course ... any thoughts on this?

That $300 could have been spent on a face to face class that spiraled out of control when your mom got ill, etc. that could have held you back. ALEKS allowed you to keep chugging forward. Congratulations!

If you are unsure about how much math background you need, maybe this will encourage you? I started stats without having taken ANY algebra ( high school about 1984- and that wasn't actually algebra, I was in a "Algebra A/Algebra B which when the sequence is completed amounts to Algebra 1, and I barely passed those lol- 2 years was all that was required, whew.). But, I do have really solid arithmetic skills from years of teaching Culinary Math. So, I started Stats, had a dismal initial assessment - I'd have to look it up, it was something like 11%. I worked on it until my brain exploded, which was somewhere around 50%, and watched the Khan Academy videos at that point (last ditch before giving up). I took notes and worked out Khan's practice problems. At that point, I went and took the DSST for the hell of it and passed. At that point I dropped my ALEKS class.
That was enough to get me through research and stats for grad school, plus I did an original research thesis where I collected and analyzed data... so it can be done! I suggest doing what you need FIRST (don't move your goal post) and then go back and get the "extra" if you're up to it.

Good luck!

I think it would be a very good idea to bone up on you math function skills before tackling Stats. If you have not had the equivalent of College Algebra then you should start there. After finishing College Algebra you will score close to 50% on the initial Pre-Calculus assessment and it will be just a short hop to score this one. If you have College Algebra level background, say from H.S., then go directly to Pre-Calc. ALEKS will review old material as necessary. The knowledge of logarithmic and transcendental functions will put you in good stead to at least score very high on the ALEKS Statistics math prep portion of its initial assessment and will help you immensely in the future if you actually have to apply statistics to real world problems If under no rush, enjoy really learning something in depth! Good luck.

Congratulations, Cypster!

And Yonks, I would add that you could also use Intermediate Algebra as an elective, and I would also suggest taking Trig instead of Precal. To pass Trig you "only" have to master 236 topics, while you have to pass 408 for Precalculus, and the content overlaps quite a bit.

If you chose this route please make sure you complete 100% of the logarithmic and exponential function topics in College Algebra. The statistics Gaussian normal function is exponential and most time series analysis will require a logarithmic data transformation to fit the additive normal model. It really helps to have a "feel" for what you are doing here which can only be obtained by studying these extremely important math functions before using them in statistics.

Hey there Yonks! Congratulations on taking that massive first step! My philosophy on a class like Stats may differ from most because of my end goal. Your final decision must be made with your end goal in mind. If you really will rely on Statistics every day for the rest of your career, then take your time to learn everything there is to learn about it. For me this is more of a requirement than a real need. That said, I hated Statistics before I started it. I tried to approach it with an open mind and an already present love for math and learning but I left this course with an even deeper hatred for this subject. Lol. No offense to all of the Stats lovers out there! Smile

Initial Asssesment:

Now here's my suggestions to you for whatever it's worth. Don't let the course scare you into second and triple guessing your answers when you take the assesment. Study well for the assesment but after you have studied, you only need to get 14 out of 20 questions correct on the initial assesment. Careful though sometimes that initial assesment may be up to 24 questions. It varies. The great thing is that the minute you hit 70% the assesment closes and you see your final passing score so they won't waste your time but TAKE YOUR OWN SWEET TIME on this assesment as you've read countless times I'm sure. You can walk away for hours and pick up exactly where you left off. The key is to be comfortable and confident with every question you answer. Just don't leave any assesment open for longer than a week or so or it runs the risk of auto closing and then they toss you into what to me became the "Humble Pie" or "Evil Pie." lol.

I agree with cookderosa in avoiding taking extra classes unless you actually need it. Passing ALEKS statistics is not entirely dependendant on a solid background in Math as I soon came to discover... My knowledge of Calculus and PreCalculus and Algebra may have helped a tiny tiny bit but they did little to save me... Statistics is all about understanding the area under a single distribution curve. Understand that and you will most likely have over half of the subject down. It's not the plug and chug of algegbra or the derivitives of Calculus. It is simply a guessing (aka predicting) game.

Thanks Cookderosa!
Interesting thing is I actually had already registered for a semester at the local community college and ended up having to withdraw right before the withdrawal window closed because my mom got sick right at that moment and I had to travel out of town immediately to be at her side. Even in her ill health my mom was looking out for me!
