ALEKS PreCalc pass! - Hometeacher628 - 08-20-2014

DD#1 passed ALEKS Pre-Calc this evening! I purchased the 1 year option, and used it as our math this past Junior ( high school) year. She took highschool Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II/Trig, and Precalc her first 2 years here at home, then thanks to the wise advice on this forum, she went onto ALEKS maths and the college math CLEP. I am thinking about having her take the CLEP college Algebra while she's at it, just in case her final college destination won't accept ACE credit.

This indeed can be accomplished by the average, determined highschooler. Special kudos to Cookderosa whose sage advice is helping me steer this ship

I'm glad she's your DD, 'cause I hate her!!! Sheesh, she's gotten Pre-Calc out of the way as a high-school junior? What an over-achiever. While she's bent on over-achieving, why doesn't she take the College Algebra CLEP and REALLY make me feel like a loser?

Congratulations to DD#1!

I doubt any college other than the big3 will accept math requirements through Aleks/ACE. Although in my opinion they should, many use Aleks for math labs but god forbid the school not get their cut. What a wonderful proactive approach! While the formulas are fresh in her mind it would be great to sit both the Algebra and Precalculus CLEP exams.

Thanks all- for the positive support! Yes, I think College Algebra CLEP should be next- while everything is fresh.

I have an interesting twist on the ALEKS/ACE plan. Our local Community college gives credit for ACE. If you come into the State University's or several private in state colleges with an A.A. from the CC, the state law says those University's must accept the classes. It's a year from now, so I'll keep the board posted. Actually she's hoping for a direct nursing school BSN placement, so who knows if she'll remain in state. She ought to be fairly accomplished at filling out forms by the end of this year!

If she wants to do nursing, then you may want to think about having her complete the statistics course(s) as well, and the DSST Statistics exam. Most medical-type programs have statistics as a requirement - in fact, for some, that is their *only* math requirement, and the traditional math sequence (algebra --> precalc --> calc) doesn't actually count toward the program at all.

Thank you and GREAT FOR HER!!!!!
Yes, knock out the CLEPs if it's possible. You've followed a path I'd suggest for high school homeschoolers. Using ALEKS is a great curriculum, and does have ACE eval credit (which might work) and then taking the CLEP exams just gives you an even better chance that eventually-when in college- your child will have earned/transferred/met credit requirements for their school! Again, great job!!

Yes, CLeP College Algebra is now on the list! She has already completed Statistics B & M. Funny though, the nursing college she is dual enrolling at this fall didn't take her statistics, as they wanted Bio Statistics.
