Which order should I take the following CLEP's - cstock - 08-19-2014

Hi Everybody, I need to take the following CLEP's and was wondering if there was a specific order I should take them. They are as follows: Humanities, American Literature, English Literature, Analyzing and Interpreting Literature (does TESC make you take the essay) and American Government. Also, I have only taken DSST exams. Are CLEP's about the same difficulty and format? Thanks everybody!!

Analyzing and Interpreting Literature is a given for most people, so I would take it first and get it out of the way. I have no experience with the other lit exams or humanities. American government should require far less study than humanities and the two lit exams, so it might be worth knocking out while you are working on the materials for the others. For fast and easy, it is hard to beat the following sequence. US History I, US History II, American Government, Intro to Sociology, Social Sciences and History General, Civil War and the Reconstruction. There is quite a bit of overlap and many of the subjects are familiar to most Americans.

I'm not aware of an essay from A&I Lit, but regardless I got all 6 credits for it accepted at TESC.

You might want to check out the Free Clep Prep.com site. Justin has a table of tests listing them from easy to hard. In addition, he shows overlaps. In other words, if you study and take test X, then study and take test Y 'cause there will be overlap. Good luck with your testing.

Take Analyzing and Interpreting Literature first. I would definitely suggest brushing up on your literary terms, but otherwise, it's an easy 6 credits. I took English Lit, American Lit, and then Humanities IN THAT ORDER and I highly recommend it. I was so much more prepared for Humanities because I had just taken the Lit tests. Do take a look at InstantCert's specific exam feedback section. I have not taken the History CLEPs.

CLEPs are essentially the same format as the DSSTs, except that there is 5 multiple choice answers to choose from instead of 4. I don't personally think that makes them much different or more difficult. It's basically the same kind of test.

The order I did them:
A & I Lit (no, TESC doesn't require the essay)
American Lit
English Lit
Humanities
American Gov

And that's the way I'd recommend them. Wth the Lit/Humanities sequence, doing it that way (except it doesn't really matter whether you take Am or Eng Lit first of the 2) helps you build on previous knowledge so when you get to Humanities, the most random and wide ranging, you'll know as much as you can. American Gov is the hardest, and not related to any of the others except somewhat to Am Lit.

CLEPs have 5 answer choices as opposed to DSSTs having 4. A general observation is that CLEPs are more straightforward, many times asking for basic names, dates, and events, where DSSTs are more involved and tricky. Don't let that make you complacent, though - CLEPs also test on cause-effect and such.
