College Math Clep Functions Question - SleepsInSeattle - 07-24-2014

Hello everyone!

I am studying for the College Math Clep and am banging my head over functions. Like another user said if they could do it over again they would know functions inside and out, live sleep, eat, and breathe functions. This is what I'm trying to do. Smile For those who have already completed the college math clep how deep into functions do I have to get to be successful on this part of the exam?

I have been using Khan Academy by watching the vids and doing the problems. I get good scores on the practice problems but then I go into the PR Cracking the Clep and the problems are totally different than Khan Academy. I keep going back and forth between the two until I understand them. This is my biggest issue with math is that once I understand the concept, the problems look foreign to me and do not work exactly how I learned them. If that makes sense. :p

I'm refreshing for the exam myself at the moment. I think the problem you're facing is that often times Khan Academy's lectures are a brief overview of topics and also assume that you have other background learning in the material. So sometimes you're doing well on Khan and then you try to take a practice exam, or traditional problem worksheets, only to find out that you have difficulty applying the concepts that you thought you knew. I think the best thing would be to have a variety of materials to develop a feel for math and keep practicing.

Check your local county library website and see if they're subscribed to something called the Learning Express database. The database has practice exams for several CLEP topics including two full length exams for College Mathematics. Not only does it provide a timed exam, it also has post review with detailed answers. They also I believe have other learning materials for each subject available including worksheets and some free ebooks.

I am also studying for College Math CLEP. As much as I hate to admit it this has been a monster for me. It has been over 30 years since I have taken a formal math class. I have spent so much time on this subject. Yes problems on Peterson's and other test prep sites all seem so different and problem concepts that I felt I had a strong handle on don't work well on other exams. I can not figure it out. This exam seems to me as being more difficult than it's reputation. I am finding that functions are my weak link along with probability etc. Most websites and study plans for this exam assume that you have a good foundation in math and do not explain concepts or problems.

Try one of my favority websites

InterActMath.com
If my link doesn't automatically list the correct book in the drop down box, scroll to - Angel. A Survey of Mathematics with Applications 9e

Click on whatever chapter you need extra help. Within each practice problem you have the option to have the software teach you.
  • For each problem you don't know how to solve, look to right there is an icon with a key 'help me solve this'
  • When you click on it another window opens and the software will go through each step by clicking the yellow continue button at the bottom.of the window.
  • There is also a print icon.

Good luck!
