Last year at this time, I thought I'd be done with my last nine credits for a BSBA-GM at TESC. I'm still nine credits away - College Algebra, Stats, and Strategic Management. Hearing that the Intro to Stats test was easy, I studied for it. I never took it as I never felt comfortable. I let time pass. Recently, I signed up for ALEKS. I tried the Stats assessment- bad. I dropped it like a hot potato, and tried the Col. Alg. assessment - and I thought I was doing okay, but I tanked.

Yesterday I got the bill for TESC for next year's tuition (it's due by 5/31).

Anyone got anything? (Other than cheese for this whine?) Some of my credits were FEMA. While I don't want to drop out of school, I just don't know what to do. I think I'm too careless for ALEKS, and too nervous for the CLEPs/DSST for these two courses. Should I change to COSC? Part of my reason for NOT going there was that they didn't have majors.

My brain is fried after trying so hard on the ALEKS assessment. Do they ding you for taking too long to answer questions? (I didn't log out while I was working the problems.) I think that there was only one that I passed on.

I'm sorry. I'm just so ... I don't know.

I'm rooting for you! (And I'm crying with you because my dog died today.)

Would tutoring help?

Does StraighterLine have any ACE-approved options for these?

You're almost done; don't give up now!

You're letting fear get in the way. I'm assuming you don't want to go on to an MBA program if you're going to find a way around college algebra and statistics. You probably won't be going on to any other masters program that requires statistics or any quantitative skills. Another thing you have to consider is that COSC is very strict about which courses it will count as UL. You would have to check to see if ACE counts the Penn Foster courses as UL or LL. You will also need UL credits outside of the major. If you don't have anywhere near 30 UL credits, you will be putting yourself far back. Plus, you will have to complete the cornerstone and capstone in two separate semesters. Have you tried going through Khan Academy videos? Learner.org also has video series for statistics and algebra. However, the best video course I've seen is offered by The Great Courses.

These are all of the options for statistics and college algebra.

College Algebra or Quantitative Analysis: ALEKS (College Algebra or College Algebra with Trigonometry), Straighterline College Algebra, CLEP College Algebra, and Uexcel ECEP Quantitative Analysis

Principles of Statistics: DSST, Straighterline, ALEKS, TECEP, Propero, Sophia Learning, and UExcel ECEP

TESC does count Saylor's Beginning Algebra as College Algebra.

Listen, nothing raises awareness like money! Smile
There are other ideas besides testing out and ALEKS! Straighterline is one, it's self paced. Also, you could take a <gulp> class with legit teacher and all. Summer sessions at the community college are registering now, and you might be surprised how some subjects lend themselves to having a live human. For you, this might be math and stats. I'd say go down to your CC tomorrow and find out what's involved with becoming a special student (non-degree seeking). Let them know you're an enrolled student at TESC, they will probably waive all the placement and prereq junk and let you sign right up.

Wow, there are a lot of good options listed by Sanantone and Cookderosa! Please do not sabotage yourself; set yourself up for success! (Do you need a reward for each math problem completed? Do you need a tutor and/or someone to help you be accountable for making progress?) It is very easy to leave the hardest courses and tests for the last few credits, so you may need a different plan for these than what has worked so far.

Oh my, PLEASE do not give up!!! If you don't need a full year, you can request extensions on your enrollment year. I forget the cost, contact the bursar's office.

If you're not comfortable testing under pressure, take strategic management through Penn Foster. Do a quick search the course has receive dexcellent feedback. If it was available when I was ready, I would have ordered the course. Believe me, the TECEP was not easy and you will need plenty of time to study for that exam.

On Aleks, give it a chance. I would start with immediate algebra take your time and work through the problems. When you get to college algebra and start the assessment, which is not timed, take a breath and work through the problems. If you become tired, you can sign off and when signing in again it will start where you left off. Same with statistics. Again, allow yourself the time to digest the material. It is not easy, I know, but Aleks is a great system for learning.

When you do the first assessment, hit the explain button for each problem you don't understand, and print to pdf or xps word doc. Use these explanations to practice and to refer to on your next assessment. Remember once you walk through each problem the first time, use your notes to practice, practice, practice. Once your feel confident, go to the master account and request a new assessment. Again, take you time but you have the explanations in front of you to through similar problems.

Also if you don't have your own, spend a little time learning the system built in graphing calculator as well. Or you can use one of the online calculators. I've provided links below. Aleks is a bit nit picky, you have to enter the exact number as requested or the problem is marked wrong. (Be careful with the neg signs, also don't automatically round numbers unless the queston asks you to.)

Refer to my fav website for math textbooks InterActMath.com
Start with the foundation text then move to your needed subject. In my opinion it will help you grab the building blocks needed for each the subject. The texts also teach how to use the calculators.

At the drop box scroll to
Lial: Beginning & Intermediate Algebra; then move to College Algebra
Weiss: Elementary Statistics; then move to Introductory Statistics

Hi! , I was in the same situation as you are couple months ago. You can extend your enrollment for 3 months. I forgot how much it cost but its cheaper than re-enroll. My degree was Pschology and I took 5 psy classes in my CC college. When I planned those classes the adviser approved that it would transfer as UL but when they evaluated, it didn't transfer as UL so I was very disappointed. I was only missing 2 UL classes to apply for graduation but because those classes did not count as UL means I cannot graduate. So I sent many emails to TESC and I told them that they misguided me about planning those classes but they cant really do anything because they said the policy changed. I could've just take 2 DSST (organizational psy/counseling) that counts as UL psy classes but I was and still facing personal problem (divorce, taking care my 2 toddlers all day/night, sleep deprivation, and no help from someone at all) I was depressed and I knew that I could not pass any exam because of all my problems. I wanted to give up but having a degree is my only ticket to have a better job and provide a better future for my children. So for the last time I sent another email to my adviser and she said I had enough credits to graduate for BA Liberal Arts. ,I agreed that I'll just take BALS degree rather than nothing. I may not graduate for my original degree plan but Im still fortunate to have a degree in hand especially in my situation. My goal is to earn Masters since I have enough GI BILL left to get in and out of grad school. I'm graduating on June. I speak multiple languages so I can use my degree to teach foreign language at Defense Language Institute and they are now hiring for the languages that I speak. Please do not give up you're almost there. Sorry not trying to hack your thread.

Don't give up. You are closer then it feels right now. Even if you take small steps, keep stepping! Looks like lots of great advice from the other members.

late bloomer, you can do it! It is the same wall that many of us facebanghead, i am planning to hammer out my math classes at my local cc that way I can drive the teacher crazy with my questions . I think you should file for a 3 month extension and deal with an approved college algebra class, there's no hard rules that you have to take all the courses in the isolation that can be self study. There are a number of pressures you face, time ,finance and believing in your ability. The latter being most important. You have demonstrated that you can do economics, which is difficult for many among us along with multiple courses displayed on here! Plus I need you to blaze a trial that I can follow! Smile I'm planning to go back to 5th grade math and work my way up to algebra and statistics if you know what I mean . Or was that mode I forget
