DSST: Art of the Western World - diablo4010 - 03-15-2006

I am having a hard time finding study materials for this exam (aside from textbooks). Can someone who has taken this exam give me a few pointers on what to focus on. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

DSST: Art of the Western World - beckysharp - 04-03-2006

I had zero art knowledge when I took this class and I scored a 67. It's less important to be able to recognize actual pictures than to understand the techniques the painters used, what they're known for and the art movements. I just read everything I could on art including the PBS series you can find on-line by the same name. I think I also used some Dummies or Idiots books from the library. A lot of Renaissance and Baroque. Some Medieval and Impressionistic. Need to understand how the arts and the artists affected the people and their times. Don't forget the famous sculptors.

Good luck and enjoy the experience.

I'm posting this in hopes of helping someone else. I've just taken this test today and scored a 72.

1. The best ONE-SOURCE book to use is Art of the Western World by Woods (It's a REALLY good book and an easy read). This book also has a study guide that you can purchase - DON'T DO IT!!!!! **The study guide is HORRIBLE. If you want a study guide, pick up one like AP Art History.

2. The book mentioned above also has a streaming video series that you can watch for FREE - Nine one-hour episodes. With the book, this makes a PERFECT class. You'll really "understand" and get art after this (seriously). The program is via the Annenberg foundation.

3. There were exactly four (4) paintings shown! So, be prepared to mentally recall a painting by either painter (sculptor) name or title of painting. This wasn't SO bad because the test tended to stick with the major artists from each era.

4. Be able to tell who influenced who AND what was the "theme" of each artist's painting (i.e. - be able to recall that Monet was an Impressionist, that Caravaggio was in the Baroque era AND that Cézanne directly effected Picasso which led to Cubism.)

5. Be able to tell what made each painting unique (or presented first time technique) (i.e. - Caravaggio used spot lighting and his paintings gave the impression of spontaneity OR that Monet was fixated with lighting - almost at a scientific level).

6. Know art vernacular.

7. While the previous poster mentioned a lot of Impressionism and Renaissance, I thought it covered ALL areas... including vague ones like Dadaism. There are also subtle clues / points made about Italian Artist vs. Northern Artist.

8. Finally, there were a few "what do you know about this painting" questions (ex: Q:What is the painting about? A: The death of a leader in the French Revolution - this is not "evident" by the painting, so you would have had to received more on this by reading or being in class).

** The book, Art of the Western World, does not break down periods in a here-it-is type of way... you'd have to "figure out" or "read closely" to know that on the same page one painting is Rococo and the other is Impressionist. So, the study guide would be good for this.

HOPE THIS HELPS SOMEONE!!!!

tt57,

First of all, welcome to the IC forum! Wink

Secondly, this feedback you just shared is EXCELLENT and will be a big help to others. I have copied it into the Specific Exam Feedback thread so that it is combined with other feedback for this exam.

Keep up the good work!

DSST: Art of the Western World - peace123 - 06-12-2010

I do not currently have access to the feedback section so I am posting this here.

I sat DSST: Art of the Western World this morning, won't have the results for 3 weeks.

This has to be the hardest exam I have taken so far, as I had very little prior knowledge in this area.

I studied about 3 weeks, watched the Annenberg media videos Resource: Art of the Western World and numerous BBC art video's /documentaries that are on youtube. YouTube - Caravaggio - Power of Art 1 , or YouTube - Power of Art - Van Gogh (1/6) or bbc impressionists YouTube - The Impressionists - Ep 1 (1/6) etc..also read parts of Art for Dummies Art For Dummies:Book Information - For Dummies and a book called " ...isms-understanding art Amazon.com: Isms: Understanding Art (9780789312099): Stephen Little: Books and I used the feedback found on instantcert forum.

Of the resources I used I would rank them in this order:
1. Instantcert feedback
2. bbc you tube eg: videos Power of art series
3. ...isms-understanding art
4. Annenberg video's
5. Art for Dummies

Things I wish I had focused on more:

Architecture: specific bldg's eg: the abbey CLUNY III and also styles eg: post- modernism
What works were commissioned by the Pope Julius II
Artists known for painting men on horses.
Art timeline ( this would have helped narrow down some of my guesses).
Vermeer
differences between French and German expressionists
The style/mood of Michalangelo's works toward the end of his career.
Greek/Roman - I was really lost on these sections of the exam
difference between lithograph/etching/engraving
Who painted aristocrats, who painted religious themes, who painted ordinary people, etc....
more history and less art

My version had 88 questions. I would say I guessed on at least 50% of this exam. This is the first exam I had trouble narrowing down choices to two possibilities. My first time through I answered about 50 question but felt confident on only about 40 answers. Then I went through and guessed on the rest by trying to narrow down the choices.

I think my version of the exam was more like a history review then it was an art exam.
I am not sure if giving my self more time to study would have helped me because I was studying from an art perspective and for my version of the exam I would have to have studied from more of a history perspective.
It will be interesting to see if I managed to pass this one- I am hoping it has a major curve built into the grading.

Update: 6/28/2010- received my score today : 69
This exam either has a major curve, or I knew more then I thought I did on this subject.

Post-Impressionism<br>Seurat: A Sunday on La Grande Jatte - 1884 - Smarthistory Is another good resource.

This exam was brutal, but I made a 71 with much study and some educated guesses.

DSST: Art of the Western World - Daithi - 10-01-2013

I just received my results back for this test today. I scored a 73, and the only book I used for studying was a used copy of The Annotated Mona Lisa by Carol Strickland. However, I've had art classes before, so I already knew a fair amount before taking the exam. Nevertheless, if you really know all the material in the The Annotated Mona Lisa you should do fine.
