College Degree with Wilderness Survival Focus - nleamons - 03-06-2014 I would prefer not having to go back to school. However, if I did, I would prefer a college degree that focused on Wilderness Survival. I like the idea of being prepared for the unexpected. Is there a college or university that might offer such a degree? I am most interested in attending a Texas college or university. What are some alternative degrees that would be helpful for wilderness survival? Any other ideas on wilderness survival? It may be sometime before I could pursue such a degree or any ideas in that respect. College Degree with Wilderness Survival Focus - rebel100 - 03-06-2014 You might find something in disaster or emergency management. I'd be shocked if you can find anything specifically in wilderness survival. There is an interesting residence program I once looked at that was a 4 year degree that included paramedic certification, extensive training like river rescue, mountaineering, and rescue. I think you even had to spend a semester oversees in the third world providing care. I forget the name of the school but it was affiliated with the SDA or some other religion.....maybe union college something or other. College Degree with Wilderness Survival Focus - ironheadjack - 03-06-2014 I agree with Rebel I am highly doubtful you will find any kind of college degree in survival. As an outdoorsman and amateur prepper, all of your wilderness survival skills are very hands on technical. A college class isn't going to teach you how to build a lean-to or start a fire with a hand drill. You need to learn those skills by doing them. Many naturalists and survivalists teach weekend courses where you learn skills, but I doubt they give out diplomas at the end. The closest things I can think of are wildlife management and recreation/leisure studies. College Degree with Wilderness Survival Focus - rebel100 - 03-06-2014 https://www.ucollege.edu/irr. They have two courses for $300, one course for $1255, and everything else is more than $2,000. College Degree with Wilderness Survival Focus - toddsbiyj - 03-06-2014 There are a few small, private, liberal arts colleges that offer degrees in courses such as BA in outdoor tourism, etc. and you would need to look in areas like Vermont, Colorado, Tennessee and other more mountainous regions. This translates to hands on work/classes in rock climbing, skiing, biking, whitewater rafting/kayaking, camping, wilderness medicine and other relevant information. If this is the route you want to go, you will have to be in residency and it will not be cheap as these were private schools.
