Now that I'm done.... - dewisant - 02-28-2014

My wife says no more education until I've written a book or two. I'm told that I'm a writer and a poet, but I make no such claim for myself. I can take early retirement in a little over three years and would like to be doing something else by then which gives me a window to develop as a writer. I really like being a student and being identified with a college and I would like to do the HUX Masters degree in Humanities from CSU Dominguez Hills after this.

My current job consists of sitting in front of a computer all day doing research. I've hit the wall on this kind of activity.

In my heart of hearts I would rather play guitar in a rock & blues band.

Sounds like you're a life-long learner, too.

Any ideas you can share about potential topics for the books you'll write?

A memoir about growing up in Glenview and Waukegan, IL; an historical fiction about colonial and revolutionary times; a book about being mentally ill; a spy book (pursuit/thriller) espionage being my favorite topic; an epic fantasy like Tolkien or Rothfuss; a memoir about living in central Europe during the Eighties; and the list goes on.

That seems like a very interesting variety of subjects! How long do you think it would take you to write 2 books? I was talking with someone recently who compiled a true WWII history reference book about one ship and its crew. It was definitely worth the effort, but it took him a lot longer to finish than he expected.

I could also write mystery stories. We have complete DVD collections of any number of PI and detective TV shows and movies. It seems to be our thing. I still love espionage though.

I totally get you Dewisant! My husband and I are very similar to you, but we both have to work our "day jobs" to pay the bills. Follow your dreams…even if you have to wait a year or two…but follow your dreams.

You could be in a band.. it's not too late. My DH was in a band many years ago and every once in a while he'll go to open mic night at a local bar. One time when he did this, he was invited to join a band of other mid-40's professionals that meet once a week as a hobby and get a real gig from time to time. He wasn't interested, but there are a lot of options for musicians out there if you just want to have fun…. you could even write a book about it! Wink

I played violin as a child and was good enough to keep playing the rest of my life. I gave up because my guardian parent was a violent alcoholic and life was always my fault. I learned to lie, cheat, and steal...after getting out of the service I almost worked for the CIA, a job I wish I had taken. I now have almost 27 years at Boeing and I have calmed down considerably even though I still have that little engine that could inside of me. I own several guitars, but have never learned to play...yet!

It is hard to find many violinists in this area. Though you will find the fiddlers in abundance.
