You know I also make something of a habit of locating my professors on Linkedin. Gives me a way to reach out to them later without having to find an email address or phone number. On a couple of occasions I have also been ask to counsel the family members of professors. My Cornerstone Professor at COSC had a kid interested in EMS, we conversed about the options and opportunities, good way to build relationships.

I also tend to connect to former professors, but sometimes I tend to be selective in making those connections. I need to learn to be less selective in order to grow my network. Although by being selective, I am more likely to have a strong personal network.

It's definitely a GREAT idea to try and build a strong relationship with a professor. You want to stick out in their mind in case you need an academic reference later down the road.
