COSC AS planning questions... - sonofLope - 01-31-2014

Hello,

As I continue to study and select the appropriate CLEP/DSST exams to take. I noticed the COSC Natural Sciences (s) requirements.

Quote:Natural Sciences (7-8 credits)
Students will understand the basic scientific process and theories and be able to apply scientific inquiry. One 4-credit course that includes a lab must be taken. The second course can be either a 4-credit lab or a 3-credit course without a lab. Examples: Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Geology, Oceanography, Physical Geography, Physics.

Am I correct, in that I need to have (7) credits to fulfill this requirment for an AS? Initially I thought it was only (3) and (7-8 for a BS). I was hoping to take the Astronomy DSST to satisfy this requirement.

Im not enrolled in any school (Simply taking exams to get 45+ units in before going through the process) and leaning toward COSC for an AS. My goal is to get a BS - but baby steps first… Just getting an AS would be wonderful to start. An accomplishment I couldn’t describe.

Knowing this as non-student could I email the school (COSC) with my questions? I’m using their requirements as a guide and just wondered if my questions e.g. like above, can be sent to them.

You will have to complete all the general education requirements including the science one you mentioned above.

From COSC website: "You may earn an Associate in Arts or Associate in Science degree. Both degrees are in General Studies and require 60 semester credits including the completion of general education requirements. The Associate in Arts degree requires 45 liberal arts credits, while the Associate in Science degree requires 30. There is usually plenty of room for open electives."

I am taking the Astronomy DSST along with a one-credit Astronomy lab course from Idaho Independent Study. It is listed as PHYS 1153. The cost is $125. Physics-Independent Study in Idaho-University of Idaho

Another forum member took this lab to help fulfill the COSC science requirement.

I also plan to take the DSST Environment & Humanity test.

From my experience, if you email them, they will probably encourage you to enroll now so that they can advise you.

A straighterline Science with Lab course plus any of the science exams would work too....you are going to need two classes worth, at least one with a lab component.

COSC is actually very good about answering questions to prospective students. They actually have a q&a session every Monday for this exact purpose. It's usually around 1pm EST.
