Women or Men with Wives/Girlfriends: How do you carry your guns? - sanantone - 11-03-2013 Are there any women here with a CCW or CHL? Are there any men here who have significant others who carry concealed? I'm trying to find a good way to carry a gun. Even though I bought the smallest (and cheapest) gun I could find that would still be good for defense, carrying inside the pants or pocket only works for me when I'm wearing baggy clothes. Carrying inside the purse is not a good idea. I heard that an ankle holster is not a good idea either, but I think it's better than carrying in the purse. Then, there is the bra holster, but I don't know.... I'm sure you are aware Sanantone, but just in case. Carrying on your hip(like a cop) where the firearm is in plain sight is considered "open carrying" and illegal in Texas. CCW position is very dependent on the type of clothing you are wearing. An ankle holster is usually for a secondary or back-up weapon, and wouldn't be ideal as your primary means of self defense. Wearing pants I would suggest carrying your gun inside your waistband(IWB), position inside your waistband is totally based on preference. Some people like behind the back, others like the front, whatever is most comfortable for you and you train the best with. Aside from that your other option is putting it in your purse or pocket. If you where form fitting pants then pocket carry is a no-go. If you wear skirts or dresses often you could look into thigh holsters... Women or Men with Wives/Girlfriends: How do you carry your guns? - sanantone - 11-04-2013 Yes, I'm aware we can't open carry in Texas. I've found that inside the waistband doesn't work well either when I'm wearing form fitting pants and shorter, less baggy shirts/blouses. I don't wear a lot of dresses or skirts, but I do wear dress pants and blouses a lot. When I move around, the gun prints through the blouses. I think I like the idea of the shoulder-type holster that fits closely to the body. She purchased a purse specifically made for gun carrying. A ton of manufacturers make them with pockets to the side specifically designed to hold a handgun separate from other items so it'll be ready-to-hand but not mixed in with the other junk that clutters our purses. I've tried it and do not like it all that much, but she swears by it. Sister does because her husband is a police officer / SWAT. Twice in the past ten years, people he busted later came after them at home, home invasion style. She does shoulder holster as well as ankle, or belt and ankle depending on what she's wearing. They also have a dog that, I swear, is the real life version of Cujo, that ended the second invasion before they even knew someone was in the house. Eew. Can't stand that dog - it's feral and loses its mind if you accidentally make eye contact - but it did more than a gun ever could and was annoyed when its chew toy was taken away and mopped up. Edited to add: My sister's philosophy is that any method of carrying that fully conceals for the sake of fashion sense is not easy to access and ruins the whole point of carrying; she said if she's stressing too much about fashion, she just leaves her carry pistols at home. The tried and true holsters - belt or shoulder - are tried and true because they work and are easy to access, which is the whole point of carrying. Fasion becomes secondary to security. She said she finds shoulder more comfortable. She's hippy and said she finds most belt holsters uncomfortable. She also pointed out that shoulder holsters, depending on how you adjust, have the added bonus of straightening your posture. Women or Men with Wives/Girlfriends: How do you carry your guns? - rebel100 - 11-04-2013 What kinda gun are we talking? I'm a big proponent of the gun being on you in some way, the pistol you left in your purse in the car is useless...so on you all the time. The KelTec and I believe the Ruger LCP have aftermarket springs (clips?) that add greatly to their conceal-ability. I have a .380 Taurus TCP, so it's small. My concern with carrying in the purse is that, when a robber surprises you, the first thing he's going to want immediately is your purse. You aren't going to have time to pull the gun out, and you're just going to hand it over to the robber. Women or Men with Wives/Girlfriends: How do you carry your guns? - scorched - 11-04-2013 My wife does not have her ccw, but we have talked about it. And the purse being stolen is my #1 concern. But I have very limited options for her, however this undershirt has been talked about as an option. Depends on the kinds of shirts you wear. Women's Holster Shirt |
