I took the test... scored 398 out of 400.
Also wrote the essay.
Can the essay bump the score to 400?
Or do you have to get a 400 first?

Essays on the DSST exams are optional and are given to the school at their option. Most don't want it and it doesn't affect the score. You can retest for DSST exams after three months.

I took Business Ethics & Society (http://getcollegecredit.com/assets/pdf/dsst_fact_sheets/DSST_BusinessEthicsAndSociety.pdf) and never did the one you tried. It all depends on what your school accepts and what you can fit into your degree. There are lots of exams you just have to find which ones fit what you need and then study hard.
