I have a new issue to share with the community regarding Excelsior college. Today my adviser told me that an upper division writing course does not meet the written english requirement for Excelsior. She claims I need two lower level writing courses to meet the requirement. I guess someone forgot to inform the author of the liberal arts catalog of this limitation. It lists writting intensive courses and even graduate level writing courses as meeting the requirement. I guess I will need to appeal the decision.

I plan to take ENG-315: Writing in the Social Sciences at BYU-Indpendent, but the adviser actually claims that upper level writing courses in general do not meet the Written English Requirement.

I would definitely go to a higher authority on that. I know that Excelsior does not accept CLEP College Composition for their written English requirement, but there's no reason they shouldn't accept an upper level course. Their website says "The minimum requirements for meeting the general education requirements will remain at the 100-level. Since this is a minimum requirement, appropriate advanced-level courses and examinations at the 200-level or higher may be substituted for 100-level courses."

You can test out for $99. The Uexcel test that Excelsior offers is an option.

If I lose this battle, I will probably take the courses I want to take and then test out just to get the requirements completed. I think this may be a case of inexperience with my academic adviser. A quick linkedin search revealed that she has only been on the job since 2012. Out of 19 advisers, there are only 5 not listed as senior advisers and I have one of them assigned as my primary adviser.

Wouldn't it be a lot simpler if Excelsior just required English Comp I and II like almost every other college in the U.S.?

I agree.....Excelsior's refusal to accept the College Composition CLEP is beyond ridiculous. It seems to be a way of trying to force everyone to take their uber-expensive ECE English Composition.

This is what my advisor is claiming. BYU does their writing sequence different, using one semester freshman comp and one upper level writing course in your discipline. I prefer the second, but my advisor is having problems thinking outside the box.

I am amazed that they haven't figured out that many people avoid their classes because they are so expensive. Their cost is the same as my daughter's top tier research college.
