Straighterline Information Please....... - Can219 - 02-10-2013

So I'm almost at the point of starting with either SL or doing Cleps. My questions are:

If I'm attending TESC do the SL classes have to be proctored?

IF yes then how is it done? Online?? ( I live overseas) How much is it per class?

Are SL classes done at your own pace?

Are there tests as you go and final at end??

Any information will be greatly appreciated. I have a choice of doing CLEPS where I'm at but its 185.00 each so I think it's more economical to do SL???

THANKS!

Two more questions:

Do you wait until all your courses are done and then send them all to tesc?

Do you transfer credit by using ACE or do they directly go over?

How do you know which books to get?

The answers could have been found easily by looking at Straighterline's website. As of fall of last year, all Straighterline courses require proctored final exams no matter which school you plan on transferring your credits to. The proctoring is done online with ProctorU with a webcam or something. Straighterline courses are self-paced. There are numerous quizzes and tests throughout the courses. At the bottom of the page, click on the tabs. They tell you what's expected for the course and which books to purchase.

With the subscriptions, you have to pay an additional $49 or more per course.

As an aside, you can also take your SL proctored finals wearing a tony the tiger costume.

Yes, I have screencaps.

Or you can take your proctor naked, I had no complaints.

LOL! Is that why you failed?? Just Kidding.....thanks for the feedback.....what are the things that can get you in trouble with the proctor...I'm afraid if I move wrong I will get failed.....??

SL is self paced.

"Are there tests as you go and final at end??" Not sure what you meant by that... but there are multiple exams. A final (which is proctored) and a midterm, with usually several tests throughout the course. It depends on the course, you could have anywhere from 6 to 20+ exams in a course that counts towards your grade, though only the final is proctored. You'll have to score 70% on the combined total number of exams to pass the course. (So if each exam is worth 100 points, and there's 10 exams, there's 1000 possible points and you need to reach 700 to pass the course).

I haven't experienced an online proctor, but you shouldn't have to worry about moving wrong or anything. The SL exams are open book, and you're allowed to have a page (front and back) of prepared notes. Aside from that, I hear they have multiple students they're monitoring at a time, so it's not like they're just staring at you for the entire time.

Wait till you're all done to send them to TESC, BUT because polices change and what not, if I were you, I'd also create an ACE account and send them there after completing each one. That way, if something happens via SL, you have another means of transferring them.

As far as the books... 3 things.

Buy an earlier edition.
Buy used.
Look at a couple sites for the best price. (I've always gotten mine on Amazon for under $5 though).

Do that and you can usually get the book cheap. Some people on here prefer buying the textbook ASAP, and reading through and studying them before signing up for SL. Doing this allows you to save time and go through the course faster and in turn paying less on a monthly subscription. Since you're overseas, you may prefer to do that, or for some books you could get an electronic version. The e-versions will cost more, but you'd get it instantly and could search for words/phrases in it.

Lastly, as you can see in my sig, when you check out, the code BGS310 will give you a course for free (so save $49).

Good luck with your studies!

Thanks Publius for taking the time to respond and for the discount code! Every little bit helps....There's one more thing I can't understand. So I'm studying along....when do I know it's time for a test? does it just pop up on a screen? ALSO can these tests be taken at anytime of the day ( since I'm overseas?) What about the finals with proctor ( anytime of day?) Sorry I just don't understand "the process". I'm spoiled with ALEKS now....

I'm going to the library with ISBN numbers to see if I can get any books there if not then I will start ordering!

Thanks Again.

No problem. Glad to help. As far as the tests go, you can take them at any time. They way SL is set up, the only thing that is required are the exams. They pace them out, so for example, Module 1, 2, & 3, Exam 1, Module 4, 5, & 6, Exam 2 & Midterm, Module 7, 8, & 9 Exam 3, Module 10, 11, & 12 Exam 4 & Final. You could just sit down and take the tests. With the modules, they give you reading to do, and some thing you watch. They give a quiz for each module and exercises from the book which you can do. However, ALL of that stuff is optional. You can pick and choose what you want and/or need and go from there. The only thing in a SL course that is necessary are the exams. Completely self paced, fully flexible.

I took 12 SL courses before the changes last fall, and am on my third one since they instituted proctoring. It isn't as bad as we thought it would be. The tests are still open book, and they allow you have at least one sheet of notes in front of you. The thing they are there to prevent is to ensure you do not look up the answers on Google.

I have taken Intro to Environmental Science, Intro to Religions, and now am finishing up my SL career and Associate's degree with American Government. Straighterline has been a godsend for my degree aspirations. I now have completed all of my prerequisites for my degree, and when they distribute them for my B.A., I might only need a language CLEP to fill in the blanks. :-)

Hope this helps you.
