Teaching Licensure in Virginia - IrishJohn - 11-24-2012 I'm seriously thinking about getting a teaching license in Virginia and would like to know if anyone else here has gone through the process and could give me some advice. Since my work experience and degree are not in education, I would be going through the Career Switcher Program at NVCC during the next available session, which is in the Fall of 2013. I know that I'll need to pass the VCLA exam (essentially Reading & Writing) and since my interest is in history, the Social Studies Praxis II exam (covers US & world history, government, geography, economics & behavioral sciences). Since it is recommended that candidates have more than one subject or endorsement area, I'm also going to take the English Praxis II exam (essentially Reading, Writing & Literature). What I'd like some advice on is preparing for these exams. Has anyone used IC or other online resources normally for CLEP or DSST exams (e.g. those found at Free-Clep-Prep.com) to study? Any advice you can give would be appreciated. Thanks! Teaching Licensure in Virginia - LaterBloomer - 11-25-2012 My local library has on-line practices tests. I don't understand the whole Praxis thing, but they did have something for them on the site that has sample tests for some CLEPs. (It's a bear to locate on my community library's web site, so you'll either need to dig, or ask a librarian.) As I said, I'm not sure it's what you're looking for, but I wish you well. Not sure if he's over here. I did post this over at that other forum as well and tried to "friend" him, but he might be busy at the moment. Teaching Licensure in Virginia - Lindagerr - 11-25-2012 I went through the alternate route to teaching in NJ. Each state has their own unique requirements and it can be confusing. I used some CLEP books and some specific PRAXIS II books. PM me and I might be able to sell you some of my books cheap. Teaching Licensure in Virginia - sanantone - 11-30-2012 I know I bring up this website a lot, but Learner.org has a lot of excellent series on the various social science subjects and education. Their videos are actually by Morningside and other college's graduate education programs. Teaching Licensure in Virginia - IrishJohn - 12-02-2012 Thanks everyone for your responses. I think I've found some good resources for these exams. I have the following so far: 1. REA CLEP book for Social Sciences & History (found at local library) 2. videos at Hippocampus 3. videos at Education Portal 4. misc. resource at Free-Clep-Prep.com 5. possibly the flashcards at IC. I think if I treat these 3 exams as CLEP tests I should be able to do well on them. The outlines for each seem to correspond to similarly-named CLEP exams. I'm scheduled to take the Social Studies Praxis II on February 2nd so I'll let you know afterwards. If you think of anything else that might be helpful please let me know. Thanks!
