Tesc for accounting - Can219 - 11-20-2012

I'm so glad to have found this forum.

Due to my husbands current employment..I am overseas and have to do online schooling.

I have decided to pursue accounting....not sure if I will do the CPA track but I can decide that later.

I'm getting cold feet because of online school reputations. I have not been able to find any graduates that have discussed their experience at TESC with the accounting degree or about their ability to find a job post school?

Is their anyone here that could tell me their experience?

Have I chosen a good school?

Will I have the skills needed to join the workforce when I'm finished?

This is a big commitment and I would appreciate any feedback.

( I currently have an associate of applied science degree in ultrasonography). Just want a career change...burned out on healthcare!

I'm working on my BSBA at TESC and have no experience in accounting employment. However, I did some research on CPA requirements before deciding against it. I would suggest you first research the requirements for the state(s) you would be seeking a license. They vary by state and require specific experience time, degrees and coursework. You're right, this is a big commitment and could be a longer haul than you anticipate.

Why I chose TESC: I prefer online, cost (I'm a NJ resident, extra bennie for me,) I received transfer credit for every course I took from 1968-77. Since finding this forum, I've also discovered Aleks, Straighterline, CLEP and DSST, which makes the process even more attractive for me.

PjBarney,

Why did you decide against accounting?? What are you currently studying??

I'm actually more interested in the CMA certif than the CPA. I have no background in accounting either but have always loved numbers, caluclating numbers, organizing....etc...I know you have to work like 2 years to get experience....I am willing to do that. As for taking the certification tests....I'm not saying they are not hard but I have taken 6 "medical" certification tests and did very well. So that kind of test taking doesn't scare me as long as I do the proper studying....I go very prepared.

Do you know if people graduating from TESC are getting hired?? I read an article yesterday that said they have a high rate of students graduating and not paying back the student loan and that it usually means they are not getting employment.??

Thanks for any feedback....

PjBarney,

When you say specific coursework...are you saying TESC does not provide the proper courses?

Oh no, not at all. I'm saying the course requirements for a CPA license vary by state. I don't remember exactly, but I think in NJ you need something like 150 credits to sit for the exam, and it is specific as far as so many credits in one area, so many in another, etc. I don't know about a CMA. I'm just saying look at the requirements first, when you are planning what you need for where you want to go.

Accounting is just not my thing. I'm also much older than most on here, I'm not looking for a lifelong career. I already had one. I was an art director/graphic designer. But I'm not ready to roll up and watch Oprah reruns all day either. Finishing my degree is something I've wanted to do, for me. Now I have time, and there are so many cost-saving options now, so I'm doing it. My B&M courses from the past were in either art or business, and a number of my business credits are upper level, so choosing a BSBA in gen. mgmt. degree was the best use of what I already have. For me, it doesn't matter what the degree is. If there is grad school in my future, it would be in something like museum design or art history, so a specific undergrad degree isn't that important for me. That's my story.

Spend some time on this site reading different threads, and you'll find all kinds of info to help you decide if TESC or any other non-traditional place is right for you. You have a direction, so that's a good start.

Can219,

CMA | How to Get Started

I just found this quickly, I didn't look up the education requirements, but thought I'd pass this on in case you haven't seen it. Hope it helps.

Can219, don't worry about the reputation of TESC.

Thomas Edison State College and also Charter Oak State College, are regionally accredited and a state run (public) school. And this is why I picked TESC, because it is a "state" college. I almost went to UoP or Capella, which are for-profit. Good thing I didn't! Now they have bad reputation. TESC will appear in the directories as a regionally accredited public state college and means they'll be considered as equal to any other tier 3/4 state college or university.

Pj...you have quite a background! I think you're more of a creative person rather than sitting behind a desk doing accounting. Thanks so much for your feedback. I am 37 and this will be a completely different career path for me. I do need to do more research about the CMA and make sure I'm gearing everything toward that. My transcripts are on the way to TESC now. CPA is king but I will probably be satisfied with CMA cert. I can always go back and do the extra 30 credits ( which TESC offer) If I feel I need to ... I guess mostly I don't want to graduate and then be told ...Oh you went to TESC? Well you can't take the CMA or CPA... I know there's a list of requirements before you can take it but as long as I qualify..

ACE King: Thanks for the feedback. I'm surprised how many people do not research and are enrolled at UOP etc,....Actually my husband is a contractor and we are associated with an American Army Base in South Korea currently and they have UOP and UMUC here and boy do they recruit our soldiers!!! I feel so sad that they are falling for it! I want to put something out there on facebook but I'm afraid of repercussions?? I just feel like our soldiers are really being taken advantage of...

There's a web site, DegreeInfo Distance Learning - online degree forum - The Front Page, I think, that is similar to this one, but geared more to post-graduate degrees. You might want to wander around it. On either that site, or this one, someone had a nice link to a school in Alabama (I think) that offered accounting courses. It was a state school, and reasonably priced. Maybe someone from this web site can pipe in with the link if it was here. As I recall, it had LOTS of courses that one would need to take before sitting for the CPA exam. Good luck. You know that you can still take classes with other scholls once you're enrolled in TESC, right? (I'm not sure what it entails. You might need permission/approval once enrolled in TESC.) Good luck.

No one will say you can't take the CMA or CPA with a degree from TESC. TESC is RA (regionally accredited). It is up to you to make sure you graduate with the required coursework for either. If you have any doubts, you can always email and ask them. I think you'll be just fine.

It takes awhile to get your transcript evaluation back from TESC (mine was 6 weeks.) If you are anxious to get started, you can always take a course or two with Straighterline.
