AAS in Environmental, Safety & Security Technologies - 29palms - 08-23-2012
What is this AAS in Environmental, Safety & Security Technologies connection I keep seeing here over and over, and alot of people that visit this web forum has this AAS degree from TESC. What is it with that? My guess its FEMA credits pulling the load here, or just alot of clepping going on. Must be a path of least resistence degree of some kind. Am I right? Lots of people, I counted about 6 so far have this particular degree.

You only need about 21 credits in Gen -Eds....the rest of the degree can be free FEMA courses...makes it very attractive to grab on your way to a Bachelors.
The course work in that degree is also applicable across a broad range of careers...it has a certain utility. I sort of wish I had it...but feel no need to pay the $3000+ in fees to grab it up!

I think most use FEMA courses to fill in the area of study, but my guess is that a lot of people already have the credits to complete it. Most of my area of study was filled with criminal justice courses. I had environmental science and IT courses that also fit into the area of study and that's the problem with the degree. IT/computer science, safety, science (not sure exactly which ones), emergency management/homeland security, and criminal justice courses are allowed in the area of study. Fire science courses would probably fit in there too. I think TESC just created the degree so that people with a mix of credits could just throw everything together into an associates degree. At least it was free for me. If I had to do it all over again, I would have just gotten the AAS in CJ.

As the others have said it is pretty much as wide open degree. You can use FEMA for the entire area of study or you can work with an adviser to try and fit something else in its place. For me I was able to request some other credits to fit in (Env. & Humanity DSST, Enviro. Geol & Lab (from Community College), and even used four ACE credits from a past job at Delta Airlines which were in Airport Safety and in Aviation Safety). If you wish to piece anything in there other than FEMA you need to speak with an adviser.

As said, it has a fair amount of utility and versatility. If you are in an operations-oriented position or might possibly be someday, it provides a basis of information through the relevant coursework to serve on a Safety Committee or similar role. I grabbed it en route to a BSBA because existing credits filled in virtually everything, requiring only 12 new credits in the area of study which were filled with FEMA. Those FEMA credits were doable during study breaks for the BSBA courses, so it took no additional time and no additional money to get a versatile bullet point on the resume.

I'll say. Wow. Where was this back in 1980 when I graduated from High School? Imagine that? Grabbing some 40 free Fema credits and only going for 21 gen ed credits. That is super kick butt. I don't blame yous for getting that AAS degree. That's what I call taking advantage!!!

sorry to bring up a dead thread, but I had a question about this degree.
If I were to get this degree with FEMA credits, would I also be able to apply those same FEMA credits to get my degree in Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness? Is it worth paying the fee, or just finish up the couple CLEPS to get my Bachelors?
