Questions About the TESC BS in Homeland Security......HELP!!!! - Doctor H - 04-21-2012 Hello Amazingly Informative People, I'm posing these questions to anyone who is pursuing or has received the BS of Homeland Security from TESC. I'd like to know exactly what I'm getting myself into. I'd like to know about a few specific courses. The Terrorism Course(my evaluation doesnt list a course code) HLS-460 Counter Terrorism HLS-420 Preparedness & Prevention HLS-429 Response & Recovery HLS-492 Research Methodology HLS-355 Critical Thinking HLS-498 Homeland Security Capstone If possible, a syllabus for each would be perfect, as it should contain everything I would like to know. If a syllabus isn't available I'd like to know the following: Are these courses textbook geared? If so, which textbooks? Are the exams/midterms/finals proctored? What is the criteria for passing? ie. Written Assignments, Final Exam, Final Paper, etc. Luckily, these are the only course I have to take through TESC. Thank you in advance. Questions About the TESC BS in Homeland Security......HELP!!!! - cooperalex2004 - 04-21-2012 Those answers are on the TESC website. Visit Thomas Edison State College: Course Offerings and scroll down to homeland security. It gives a link to the syllabus on each link. To use one course as an example: HLS-355 has no midterm but contains 7 written exams and an 8-10 page final paper. It requires two textbooks. Read through each of those courses and I think the answers are all there. Sounds like a lot of work for three credits... I also don't see HLS-492 on the list so I'm not sure how you would take that course. Good Luck. Questions About the TESC BS in Homeland Security......HELP!!!! - Doctor H - 04-22-2012 Thanx a bunch :coolgleam: Questions About the TESC BS in Homeland Security......HELP!!!! - rebel100 - 04-22-2012 What, if any, are the outside methods of earning these credits? I know CSU pueblo has some, I suspect WNMU has several if not all. There is likely a cheaper/quicker/better methos to attain all but the capstone. How tightly does TESC hold you to the course titles? I have a friend whom this would be perfect for. Questions About the TESC BS in Homeland Security......HELP!!!! - sanantone - 04-23-2012 I would like to know if anyone finds these courses somewhere else. I went through the CSU Pueblo and WNMU catalogs and didn't find anything remotely close except for a terrorism course and a homeland security course which would end up in the area of study electives. The closest courses I've found are at Central Texas College and San Antonio College. It's like TESC purposely made it impossible to take the requirements somewhere else. You can always ask. These are the courses I found at CTC and SAC. CTC Introduction to Homeland Security 3 EMAP 1400 Principles of Basic Emergency Management 4 LGLA 1304 Military and National Security Legal Issues 3 HMSY 1338 Homeland Security Emergency Communications Management 3 HMSY 1342 Understanding and Combating Terrorism 3 Second Semester EMAP 2355 Disaster Recovery or HMSY 1339 Homeland Security Emergency Contingency Planning 3 EMAP 2300 Developing Volunteer Resources and Decision Making 3 EMAP 2301 Leadership and Effective Communication 3 HMSY 2337 Managing a Unified Incident Command 3 HMSY 1470 Final Project in Homeland Security and Emergency Management http://www.ctcd.edu/catalogs/2011_2012_TX/texas2.pdf#page=31 SAC HMSY 1337 - Introduction to Homeland Security HMSY 1343 - Weapons of Mass Destruction HMSY 1342 - Understanding and Combating Terrorism HMSY 1341 - Critical Infrastructure Protection HMSY 1340 - Homeland Security Intelligence Operations HMSY 1291 - Special Topics in Homeland Security HMSY 1371 - Transportation Security Program: Emergency Management / Homeland & Transportation Security II, Level I Certificate - San Antonio College - Acalog Program: Fire Science / Fire Fighting with an Emphasis in Homeland Security, A.A.S. - San Antonio College - Acalog Program: Emergency Management / Homeland & Transportation Security I, Level I Certificate - San Antonio College - Acalog Now that I think about it, some of these courses might work. SOS-440: Terrorism (I'm guessing you're taking this at Penn Foster) HLS-410: Counter Terrorism: Constitutional and Legislative Issues - Understanding and Combating Terrorism from SAC or CTC or Military and National Security Legal Issues from CTC HLS-420: Prevention and Preparedness - Homeland Security Contingency Planning from CTC HLS-429: Protecting the Homeland, Response & Recovery - Disaster Recovery from CTC SOS-492: Research Methods in the Social Sciences - Research Methods is offered as an independent study course at several colleges, but most aren't geared toward the social sciences. You should really ask about the Research Methods in Psychology ECE. HLS-498: Capstone in Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness - You could get lucky and be able to transfer in CTC's Final Project in Homeland Security and Emergency Management. Questions About the TESC BS in Homeland Security......HELP!!!! - Doctor H - 04-23-2012 The Terrorism course at Penn Foster is part of which program. I dont believe individual courses are available from Penn Foster. Is this correct? Questions About the TESC BS in Homeland Security......HELP!!!! - sanantone - 04-23-2012 You have to contact Workforce Development to purchase individual courses. I think tuition is still around $90 per credit hour and their Terrorism course is ACE-approved. I know some people on this forum have gotten upper level credit for it at TESC. |
