Close to Finishing Traditional College but... - StarTorch - 04-20-2012
I have a 1.98 GPA on academic warning.
I really don't want to sit in another Religious Studies class about theory,
method, practice, etc. I really don't like my major:mad: but I felt I had no choice
but to stick it out. I am tired of college and want to be done!!!
I have:
-failed over ten classes
-173 attempted credits after this semester
- Currently earned 105 credits. May have 117 after this semester.
-no more steam in me
- bills to pay and need to help my mom with utilities. So I need to work
full time.
-no patience for a classroom setting where a prof could suck and waste my time.
However if I transfer to EC or COSC my transcript will have my trad. uni. credits
primarily and only two classes from these colleges. I think it may be a problem
but then it may not be as my goal is to travel and teach English abroad for a while.
Anyone else been here or is it just me?

Thats pretty much how it works around here! Give us an idea how many courses are at the upper level too (300-400 level)

Fall and Summer 2012 are classes I was thinking about taking to finish but I don't really
want to but it seems to look better if I graduated here than EC or COSC where I would
only need two classes to finish. If I did this I would feel like I am cheating the system. But
to take more classes here means more money than I already have saved. In my situation,
it seems like a toss up.
My question is: Has anyone else been in this 120+ situation with no degree? Would you take
more classes at one of the Big 3 so it looks like you did a normal 30 credit residency requirement
or take the two more classes and get the degree?

Get the degree. The end. Graduate. Move on with life. You passed "120 traditional student" long ago, so what you "look like" isn't going to be recovered by 30 residency credits. TESC is a net for people exactly like you.
OTOH, if you have money to burn and want to spend an extra 6 months taking classes, knock yourself out. By my calculations, that "image issue" is going to cost you $8500.

I like TESC and have 2 degrees from the school so I always recommend it. Don't worry about the image part. A degree is a degree. Get it and get done with it. TESC will transfer your credits as long as they are a D or higher. Your GPA at TESC is based on all courses taken only at TESC. You are probably very close to finishing a BALS at TESC and will probably just need to take some CLEP tests and thats it.

Thanks cookderosa for giving it to me straight forward and simple. It really is that simple. Sometimes we over complicate things
I ruled out TESC because they didn't seem to have a payment plan (or so I read on the forums here). I'll go back and double check.

TESC has an application fee and an annual enrollment fee. I do not believe there is a payment plan. It's going to be just under $3000. You need an eval though, and that comes with an application. If you go through the application process, you'll get an eval and you can post that here. Everyone will be able to direct you to the cheapest credit sources for any remaining credits you may have. THAT will be helpful for you. Let's say, hypothetically, that you had everything except English 102. You'd learn that you can do that today by sitting a CLEP exam $80. Or, let's say you needed a math, you could complete that through ALEKS $20, etc. Credit sources are something that this group really REALLY does a great job with. Good luck to you. FWIW, I have a lot of undergrad credit too. I have 2 associate degrees and a BA plus about 21 unused units that I'd love to roll into another BA. So by no means are you alone in your 170+ credit transcript.

I'm going to look at your transcript- it should give you an idea of what to expect from a TESC eval. Quick question, it looks as if you're in a heavy semester now, do you expect to pass this semester? Also, do you have only 2 classes remaining? (1 in summer, 1 in fall?) Is that correct?

ok, I did an unofficial-unofficial eval. [ATTACHMENT NOT FOUND]
If you pass this semester, I think you'd complete the humanities major. What I don't know about is the math because I don't know if that "D" will come over and qualify. You may need 1 additional natural science or computer credit which can be done easily through ALEKS or CLEP. Also, it looks like you only need a few free electives, which can be completed through FEMA for no cost. In other words, if you can pull through this semester, you're within a few days of being finished.
