Gen Ed Electives help at TESC - jtalama - 04-06-2012

First of all, thank you all so much for your help!

My question is this:
Could I apply previously earned credit to fulfill a 6 credit gap in General Education Electives?

Code:
BA General Education Electives (18 SH) > Complete 18 semester hours from any of the following > General Education subjects: Humanities, Social Sciences, > Natural Sciences or Mathematics. !! Exception Over in Humanities and Natural Sciences; needs 14.32 credits Semester Hours Completed: 14.67 Src Course # Title S.H. Grd TESC # Notes 3.. CCMC1850 Micro Sys Maint.......... 2.00 A COS-299 *CC *TE 3.. OISS2912 Sys Op As400............. 2.00 D COS-352 *CC *TE 3.. COPR2960 Sys Analysis I........... 2.00 D CIS-320 *CC *TE 3.. As you can see from above, I need 6 credits and was planning on taking the Social Sciences and History CLEP. Is there any chance I could apply previously earned credit from my available bank of unused credit? See below:

I would assume you could use ENC-103 & ENC-104 for credit but you'd still be short. I don't think the rest of them would fit. You should call the Expressline and ask if you can move the credits around any better. Why is COS-101 ruled ineligible? Did you get credit for the CLEP computer exam too (that is what happened to me)? If not you might ask why they aren't using that since I'm using that for my BA in Communication (in NATSCI/MATH Gen Ed Requirement)

Intro to Management Principles, LAN I and LAN II wouldn't apply?

Early on I was told by an adviser to take the Intro to Computers CLEP when I had already taken Intro to Computers class a while back. So, there is duplication going on but the Intro to Computers class is being used under Natural Sciences. They blamed me for the error but it was both of our faults. Irks me.

Courses from the CAP department are just like all of the business electives I have, don't count as general ed credits. Simply put the course must be in a category below or they have to re-evaluate it to match something that is.

General Ed Departments at TESC Include:
-English Comp: ENC
-Humanities: ART, COM, DAN (Dance), ENG, FIL (Film), FONL (Foreign Language), HUM, JOU (Journalism), MUS, PHI, PHO (Photography), RTV (Radio/TV), REL, THA (Theater)
-SOC Sci: ANT (Anthropology), ARC, ECO, GEO, HIS, LAS (Labor Studies), POS, PSY, SOC, SOS
-Math/Nat Sci: AST, BIO, CHE, COS (Note only certain courses apply), EAS (Earth Science), ENS (Enviro Sci), GEO, MAT, NAS, PSY, STA (Stats)
-Interdisciplinary: Cultural Studies courses, Enviro Studies, Urban Studies, Women's Studies

You can check out this info in the Degree Planning Guide:

Thank you!

* If I understand you correctly, CAP courses shown in my "other courses" list cannot be applied?
* Could they be applied if they were re-evaluated as a COS??
* According to the TESC handbook, CAP means Computer Application. I'm not sure if they intend that in the literal meaning, in which case LAN I and LAN II should not be listed as "computer applications."

Nor should Cabling Technology.

But again, I'm not exactly sure what constitutes a CAP vs. a COS.

Yes, if they will re-evaluate them then they could fit. You have to show them that the new course is a better fit than the one given. In the case of these networking courses of yours I don't see them matching anything outside of CAP. You can always use the PLA search page to try to find a matching course but I don't see those courses counting for anything else since the ones they matched to are perfect matches and nothing in COS or CIS is specifically about networks. I'm not sure what the rest of your eval looks like but you may also have their computer blocking some of your classes due to the GPA requirement. Of the courses shown, you aren't at the needed 2.0 GPA to graduate and if that is the case any of those "D" courses are being excluded since they would prevent your graduation. The courses you have GPA listed next to in the coding would count for at least a free elective course but you need to raise your GPA to offset their acceptance (see degree planning guide page 43). They basically deny them for your own protection.

TESC counts these as Gen Ed Electives according to Thomas Edison State College: General Education Electives

Computer Science

* Introduction to Computers (COS-101)
* C Programming (COS-116)
* Visual BASIC (COS-191)
* C++ Programming (COS-213)
* Assembly Language (COS-231)
* Data Structures (COS-241)
* UNIX (COS-283)
* Computer Architecture (COS-330)
* Operating Systems (COS-352)
* Artificial Intelligence (COS-451)

Computer Information Systems
* Computer Concepts and Applications (CIS-107)*
* Database Management (CIS-311)*
*not all CIS courses apply as general education elective.

Thank you for the research. You've been very helpful!

Looks like I probably have the best arrangement of credit already.
