Requesting CLEP prep ideas, suggestions, tips for Macroeconomics and a History - Peach - 03-05-2012 Hello. While working full time and taking traditional classroom courses, I have been using InstantCert for the last few months. After having self-prepared for the Principles of Microeconomics CLEP that I took and passed with a 50 last Summer, I knew I needed a better, more focused resource. In Feb., I passed the Information Technologies and Computer Applications CLEP (using only InstantCert) with a 58. Mind you, I maintain a 3.9 GPA (and have only two more classes and two more CLEPS to go to graduate this Spring), so I was less than pleased with the overall scores received on these CLEPs, especially considering how much time and effort I put in to preparing. I thought that these were highly challenging tests. I am now preparing to take the Principles of Macroeconomics CLEP that I hope to take within the next few weeks. To prepare for this, I am using a combination of InstantCert, SparkNotes, and Economics for Dummies, but feel I need something more. For those of you who have taken this CLEP, can you share any tips, ideas, suggestions, etc.? After Macro, I will then need to CLEP out of a History. I am assuming that US History I or II would be easier than one of the World History options (?). I haven't taken a History class since high school, and that was nearly 30 years ago! Looking for feedback including which History CLEP is generally recommended, and what resources you've had success using. Thanks so very much, Peach Requesting CLEP prep ideas, suggestions, tips for Macroeconomics and a History - DMiracleGuy - 03-06-2012 Hey there Peach, I am not sure where your school will apply the credit, but I just took the History of Vietnam War DSST test today. I got a 70 on it, although I felt like I did much better than that, before I got my score from the computer. I started studying two weeks ago for the test, and went on to You Tube and watched all 48 episodes of the PBS video history of the war and then went through the Instantcert flashcards 2-3 times. I felt like i was very well prepaired for the test, and having gotten more than the passing required score, feel like it was well worth my time and the 100.00 for the test to get the credit. My degree plan will populate the credit into global issues, so hopefully this will satisfy the requirements for you in history. Good Luck! DMiracleGuy Requesting CLEP prep ideas, suggestions, tips for Macroeconomics and a History - columbia - 03-08-2012 For macroeconomics I strongly recommend getting -Principles of Macroeconomics- by Mankiw. I studied the book for two weeks and checked out the flashcards just to find they did not go into as much detail, plus the book gives example scenarios to reinforce apply what you've been reading. Using Mankiw's books I got a 68 for macro and a 72 for micro. For anyone who has not taken either economics clep almost the first half of the two Mankiw books are identical because it's covering the basics, so you can save time. I've taken all four of the history tests in question and yes, US history is easier than world history (because there's less material to cover) but I warn you not to do US history 2 if you're looking for an easy clep. Requesting CLEP prep ideas, suggestions, tips for Macroeconomics and a History - Peach - 03-12-2012 Thank you for the tip! If nothing else, I will use similar study/prep strategies for whichever History CLEP I decide to take. Peach Requesting CLEP prep ideas, suggestions, tips for Macroeconomics and a History - Peach - 03-12-2012 Excellent advice, thank you! I will look into acquiring Mankiw's book. May I ask what resources you used to prepare for US History I? Deana Requesting CLEP prep ideas, suggestions, tips for Macroeconomics and a History - columbia - 03-14-2012 When I prepared for US History 1 I used the flashcards and nothing else, but I enjoy history and already knew a lot of the material. The flashcards will get you a pass if you study them enough. A trick with preparing for history is having a rough picture of the timeline in your head as a skeleton to attach other information to. If you don't have a general knowledge of the history period you're studying for I recommend getting a hold of a high school text book or something similar that can be read through once to give you the rough storyline, you don't want something too detailed as the flashcards will give you the details you need. Requesting CLEP prep ideas, suggestions, tips for Macroeconomics and a History - clepscholar19 - 06-06-2012 Peach: I used the Macroeconomics Demystified book, and I got a 62. I also am a CollegePlus student, so I'm sure their Learning Network also helped with my score. It's a lot of info, but I didn't think Western Civilization I and II were too bad for my history credits. For those, I used the REA guides. Amazon is the way to go! Requesting CLEP prep ideas, suggestions, tips for Macroeconomics and a History - cswsv - 11-10-2012 Youtube has numerous videos on Macroeconomic principles. This playlist seems to have a good fundamental description of the various graphs, curves, and principles used in Macro: The Economics Classroom - YouTube Requesting CLEP prep ideas, suggestions, tips for Macroeconomics and a History - Westerner - 11-10-2012 I would say US History 1 is the easiest history CLEP. The REA book and practice tests are excellent for it. columbia Wrote:A trick with preparing for history is having a rough picture of the timeline in your head as a skeleton to attach other information to. Requesting CLEP prep ideas, suggestions, tips for Macroeconomics and a History - LaceyLady - 11-10-2012 I used AP study guides for US History and Macroeconomics from the library for those CLEPs. I studied the guides and took the practice tests included, both of which I found to be quite helpful. My scores were 77 for Macroeconomics, and 68 and 64 for US History I & II respectively. Having used REA Study Guides for other exams, I can say that those study guides are very good, and would be a good option. For these subjects there are a number of good resources/study guides that you can use depending on which type works best for you (REA, AP guides, textbooks, Demystified, videos, flashcards). For history, there are several good history documentaries that you can watch on the internet/youtube or TV (PBS/History Channel). I agree that US History would be easier than World History. I personally found US History 1 easier than 2, but I am also interested in early US History (I'm a Revolutionary War and Civil War living history reenactor). Hope this helps! |
