Analyzing and Interpreting Literature CLEP - DressageQueen - 02-23-2012
I am preparing to take the Analyzing and Interpreting Literature CLEP in a few weeks. Literature is not my strong suit but I LOVE to read. I have taken a course on analyzing literature two years ago and only remember bits and pieces. I have heard that this is one of the easiest CLEPS so I have decided to start out taking this one. Before September, I am going to try to take the CLEPS: world religions, US History I (one of my worst subjects), Analyzing and Interpreting Literature (AIL), and Biology (my favorite!). I am a homeschooled freshman and I am taking a biology co-op class that will be done in May. Is there any tips on taking the AIL CLEP? What do you think of speedyprep.com? How much studying do you need to do to pass the AIL (and others) CLEPs?
Any and all advice appreciated!

Hello,
I am a home-schooled high-school graduate, and I just took and passed the Analyzing and Interpreting Literature CLEP test. I also considered Literature to be a weak area in my skills, but it turned out that I did just fine. If you are taking the AIL test, I would highly recommend ordering or downloading the "2012 Official CLEP Study Guide." The book gave me a clear understanding of the difficultly level, format, and simply what to expect during the exam. I also studied an 'unofficial' study guide made by the Research Education Foundation. (REA) The questions in the REA book were much more difficult than in the Official CLEP Study Guide, but I still believe that it helped. I would only get the REA book if you feel you really need it.
During my practice test in the Official Study Guide, I answered 49 out of 73 questions correctly. (The actual exam contains approximately 80) On my actual exam I did much better. They didn't tell me what my raw score was, but my scaled score was equated to 64. The minimum passing score was 50. So, do the practice test in the Official Study Guide, and if you answer most of the questions correctly, go ahead and take the exam. (I got 49 correct on the practice test and then MORE than passed the actual exam) I found that the questions on the actual exam were generally about the same as in the in practice exam. (As far as the difficultly level goes)

I took this exam a few weeks ago with very minimal study time. I would recommend looking up some literary terms and becoming familiar with them and taking the Peterson's practice tests. The scores on those practice tests seem to be very similar the score you will get on the actual exam. That alone should be enough preparation.

I took the test a little over a week ago. My first CLEP as well. If you subscribe to InstantCert you will get access to the "Exam Specific" section of this forum. Within that area you will find a thread about this CLEP (and all the others) with very specific descriptions of what to study. No one is giving you the answers, but they are teaching you not only how to fish, but where the best fishing can be found.

Always start with the search feature. There are plenty of posts on A&I. Many people pass it with no preparation whatsoever. Probably many of the people who did prepare for it didn't need to.

Score: 56 55 59
Percent: 56% 55% 59%
Correct: 45 44 47
Incorrect: 35 36 33
what are my chances with passing the actual clep?

You're probably ready to take the clep (it depends on how high a score you are seeking), but keep taking the peterson's until you feel comfortable with why the correct answers are correct.
Time is verrrrry important with A&I Lit, so read the question and then find the answer. Also know your literary terms.
