Transferring to TESC with a strange mix of credits - cooperalex2004 - 12-13-2011 I have quite a strange mix of credits and was looking at transferring to TESC once I finish my AA in the Spring. By then I will have 102 credits. With all of my business credits I am receiving Certificates in Management, Human Resource Management, and Marketing. My degree will be an AA in Liberal Education with Emphases in Accounting and Mass Communication. I guess my main questions are: -Anything they won't take from my list below -I meet the General Ed requirements from Minnesota which is 10 "goal areas", but TESC wants Humanities, Social Sciences, and Nat Sci/Math. Would I meet all of those on a BA in Communication or Journalism? -Will accept a Logic course from a regionally accredited community college for the Math requirement. The reason I took it is that here in Minnesota it meets the Math requirement at any school in the state (unless they require something like Stats or Algebra). -I've seen their transfer list for CLEP and DSST and it looks like all of them transfer but sometimes differently then my community college took them. -Do they accept Prior Learning Assessments completed elsewhere? I have 2 courses completed that way. -I completed what the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum requires for English Composition. It is 4 credits in one semester. Does that transfer and satisfy TESC's requirement? They don't offer such a thing as two semesters of English Comp at my school. I have completed Business Writing (3 credits) as well (which at my school is in the English Comp Department). Thoughts? Ideas? Here is my strange mix of credits: To Finish in May 2012 (Normandale Community College): S 12 BIOL1110 3.0 Z IP Environmental Biology S 12 BUSN2252 3.0 Z IP Professional Selling S 12 COMM1421 3.0 Z IP Media Writing:Journalism S 12 ECON2202 3.0 Z IP Macroeconomics Finishing this Week (Normandale Community College): F 11 ACCT2252 4.0 Z IP Prin of Accounting 2 F 11 COMM1111 3.0 Z IP Interpersonal Comm F 11 COMM1113 3.0 Z IP Public Relations F 11 GEOL1111L 1.0 Z IP Environmental Geology Lab F 11 PHIL1102 3.0 Z IP Logic Completed (Normandale Community College): F 06 COMM1106 3.0 B Mass Communication F 06 SOC 1104 3.0 C Intro Sociology F 06 THTR1111 3.0 C Intro to Cinema S 11 ACCT2251 4.0 A Principles Accounting 1 S 11 ECON1100 3.0 P PLAN/Personal Finance (Prior Learning Assessment) S 11 ENGC1101 4.0 A Freshman Composition S 11 EXSC1112 1.0 A Tennis S 11 GEOL1110 3.0 B Environmental Geology S 11 HLTH1111 1.0 A Community CPR S 11 PLAN1030 2.0 P Work/Life Plan SS11 BUSN1130 3.0 B Intro to Int'l Busn SS11 BUSN2100 3.0 P PLAN/Hum Rel/EffctvTeams SS11 ENGC1103 3.0 A Business Writing SS11 MATH0600 3.0 P Elementary Algebra (Not college level) DSST Credits: Business Ethics and Society - 430 Principles of Supervision - 432 Intro to Computing - 435 Human Resource Management - 57 Intro to Business - 419 CLEP Credits: Analyze and Interpret Literature - 54 Prin. of Marketing - 59 Prin. of Management - 54 Info Systems - 67 ACE Credits (from Delta Airlines): 1 Vocational SH Airport Ramp Operations 1 Vocational SH Mail Handling 2 LL SH Customer Service/Customer Relations 2 LL SH Aviation Safety 2 LL SH Airport Operations/Civil Aviation 2 UL SH Aviation Safety Kind of an odd mix of credits for a 23 year old. My current job I've had for 5.5 years is working at a TV station so I hope to complete some Communication related PLA's at TESC. I do everything from Camera, Audio, Floor Directing, and Newscast Directing, as well as having an Emmy from this year and a Student Television award from High School. I know they don't just hand the credits out, I'm willing to do the work. Is TESC a good choice to finish a BA? Transferring to TESC with a strange mix of credits - dew125 - 12-13-2011 TESC is great for "strange mixes of credits". What BA degree would you like, and we could probably better help you. Transferring to TESC with a strange mix of credits - cooperalex2004 - 12-13-2011 I was looking at the BA in Communication or Journalism. The communication one looks like the better choice since they offer any courses I would need at TESC and you don't have to get other schools involved. Transferring to TESC with a strange mix of credits - dew125 - 12-13-2011 Use this: Thomas Edison State College/ Prior Learning Assessment Description Database to both plug in some of your unknown earned credits and potential PLA courses to see what it be at TESC. Also, this thread http://www.degreeforum.net/general-education-testing-discussion/7793-alpha-numerics-dummies.html will give you a good idea where your credits will fit. I don't have the answers to your other questions. Someone else might, or you'll have to wait for your evaluation. Transferring to TESC with a strange mix of credits - cooperalex2004 - 12-13-2011 Thanks. That link was nice, it shows course codes they don't offer as classes but have in their system. The question about Logic now becomes does PHI190 Formal Logic meet the Math requirement? Hopefully someone else knows. Transferring to TESC with a strange mix of credits - dew125 - 12-13-2011 You might want to do an advanced search for your logic question. I'm sure someone else has asked the same question. A couple thoughts for you... a BA in Humanities might be a good option for you because you can use both communication and journalism type classes. You might be able to test out of the rest of a degree in humanities without having to deal with PLA; unless you're dead set on those degrees. 12 of the 18 required UL credits can be acquired by straighterline or testing. You also might want to consider a BSBA (business) degree after you finish your first--based on all the business credits you have. There are specific requirements that you'd have to look into, but it is an option. You have many options, but you are on the right path. Good luck! ps...sorry about the typos, I pecked this out on my iPhone.... Could you please tell me what Straighterline courses or tests you are referring to that are upper level humanites at TESC? Thanks! Danielle Transferring to TESC with a strange mix of credits - cooperalex2004 - 12-13-2011 TESC's List of Humanities courses is at: Thomas Edison State College | General Education Electives The CLEP and DSST acceptance list is on pages 193-194 of the college catalog: http://www.tesc.edu/files/Catalog2011.12.pdf As far as Upper Level (300 & 400 numbers) courses go it looks like the only one that is from Humanities comes from REL405 - Intro to World Religions (DSST Test). As far as Straighterline goes I haven't done any of those so I'm not sure how they transfer. I'm still more interested in the Communications Major I think. Hi Danielle: This is what I have mapped out for me: dsst Business ethics and society, SL business communication, world religions, and tecep marketing communication. I'm doing the final this evening for bus com. It's an interesting class. Cooperalex: straighterline transfers as ACE recommended credit directly to TESC.
