Transfer to 4 year, BA/BS Question - seanmathews - 09-23-2011 So i previously asked a question "how will Clep tests affect my degree and transfer" and i was told i should be fine, just make sure my current graduating school accepts Clep (mines a community college that takes up to 30 units of Clep) for my AS degree, and also that whatever school i want to transfer to for my BA/BS that they accept them too... Thats my problem, im not 100% sure where i want to transfer.. i know i want to work towards a BA/BS after my AS, but im not sure which school, also not sure what field of study, i always say "Business" as kinda a default when asked.. im leaning towards Business.. but not certain Do the majority of CSU (Cal State Universities) accept Clep? or do i have to have my whole 4 years of education planned. Right now my main focus is my AS, therefor i want to start my Clep testing ASAP. Any advice or opinions on this? Or can anyone relate and what their outcome was? Transfer to 4 year, BA/BS Question - P00057870 - 09-23-2011 If you have a specific degree plan and/or specific college you wish to attend, that is the first place you need to research. Many of us who discovered this site and the information that was available through these forums and the help of others who went before have decided to make a change and go to one of the "Big 3" that are often mentioned here: Thomas Edison in NJ, COSC, and Excelsior. That often allowed us to do the complete degree either through using CLEP/DSST/ECE, TESC testing possibilities. These same schools offer online classes for anything else you need and you can often take the some of the other courses through some of your local schools if you feel you need face-to-face classes for something. Perhaps it is time for you to do some research on these 3 schools and whether they may hold the key for your next step toward your BA or BS, after you complete your Associates. Personally, once I looked into them, and felt Excelsior fit my needs best, I transfered to them and finished my AS in a heartbeat. That was all I originally intended but once I found this site, there was no reason to stop there, so went on to get that BS. It has definitely made a difference where I work in how I am being treated and looked at. When I grew up (I'm among the OF category), a high school diploma was enough and as long as you could do the job you would be allowed to move ahead and were well paid. Not so - the BS is now worth what a high school diploma was worth then. If you are planning on going on to do something more specific than "business", that may change your area of focus on schools. Generally for business, it is not as critical which school you choose to go to as perhaps someone who plans on going to engineering school, law school, etc., as that may in turn dictate where/whether you will get internships and jobs, as what shows on your resume may make a difference. Most of us just need a degree for our own occupational needs, personal gratification, and many here have used this method to get through their BA or BS quickly and affordably, and then concentrated on where they wanted to get their Masters. I'm sure others more knowledgeable than I will be chiming in soon. Judy Transfer to 4 year, BA/BS Question - seanmathews - 09-23-2011 Okay i will definitely have to look more into the Big 3 as you mentioned. I will be getting my AS in Fire Science through Santa Ana College since i already invested a few semesters in some Fire Tech classes, but all i need is my general ed, and like i said that school accepts up to 30 units of Clep so thats my plan for now, hopefully planning on finishing my AS by the end of 2012 if not sooner, i still need to meet with a counselor. I will also have to look into what other BA/BS degrees are available, i wanted to use the Business degree as sort of a back up and fall back option. My only problem is, i can read about degrees and ways to go, but how do i know if that field will interest me or bore me to death? Might sound a little "out there" but is there a way to get a taste of certain degree fields to get an idea of interest? Also, this may be a little off topic, but as much as i want to get my AS and BS/BA out of the way ASAP, im having a hard time deciding if i want to do this 90-100% online, as much as i hate the boring teachers lectures that put me to sleep, the over priced books and tuition fees, crowded schools and having no time, i always enjoy meeting new people in class, a small part of me feels like this is going to kick me out of society quick. How did every ones social life go after committing to online? There's a chance i have a totally wrong view on this so please feel free to correct me! Thanks for your help! Transfer to 4 year, BA/BS Question - sevyn220 - 09-23-2011 Here's a link to where the Cali university system gives advice to those of you transferring from community college to a 4yr. If you have a look around it may give you more information about your particular situation. CaliforniaColleges.edu - Advice for California Community College Transfer Students As for online vs bm. If you're still young and have nothing holding you back, there's nothing like campus and college life. Just for the experience of it all. Beyond just the academics, there's a lot of social skills you'll pick up as well as life skills. Online learning is more geared towards those of us adult learners who simply don't have the time to devote to going to class or those that just don't like or thrive in classroom learning environments. Online learning is just as invaluable as classroom learning but no point in missing the college experience if you don't have to. Good luck no matter where your journey takes you! Transfer to 4 year, BA/BS Question - BGSU_Alum_86 - 09-23-2011 I want to chime in here in regards to the Cal State system. They are fairly new to accepting CLEP exams (just last year) and I am pretty sure they only accept the math and science exams, nothing else. Of course, you can always check with the university you are hoping to attend. As of this date, none of the UCs accept CLEP, but hopefully that will change. I can totally understand what you mean about not being sure you want to accomplish your entire college career completely online. There are so many options available to you! Why not look at making a dent in your college expenses by testing out of your those general ed courses that you already have some familiarity with? Many traditional universities will set a maximum number of CLEP credits that can be transferred in, requiring their students to take a minimum of 15-30 credits at the actual university during their senior year. Good luck to you! I work at a test center right up the road from where you are attending college! Transfer to 4 year, BA/BS Question - cookderosa - 09-24-2011 Your question is easier than you think. Go to your CC's website and pull up a list of Articulation Agreements with Cal State 4 year colleges/universities. This will be a list outlining the written agreement for guaranteed transfer. In an articulation agreement, the 4 year school accepts the entire AA/AS as a "block" of credit meeting the first 2 year requirements. In other words, the CLEP policy of the 4 year school ISNT RELEVANT. Now, that's only true in an articulation agreement, if you go to a school in Texas, they'll likely evaluate all your credits one at a time- and CLEP policy applies. Same with any of the big 3, they don't have block transfer credit agreements. Also, if you stop short of finishing your AA/AS DEGREE and just show up at the doorstep of the university, every one of your credits are subject to the university policy. So, understanding exactly how these agreements work can make this process a simple and seamless one for you as long as: 1. You complete the entire AA/AS at your community college 2. Attend a college with a written articulation agreement to your CC 3. You work with your CC advisor....but know your stuff, sometimes <cough> advisors make mistakes. <cough> ;P 30/120 CLEP is a good deal. That's a full year! I know a lot of people zone in on the big 3, but it's a big world out there and there are a lot of ways to use CLEP that have nothing to do with the big 3 Just know what you're buying and what the rules are- then you can use them to YOUR advantage. It looks like they take a lot more than math and science--check out this link as an example of how to get from Santa Monica College to a CSU using CLEP (scroll down to the table--this is a pretty detailed document) Transfer to the California State University (CSU) System Transfer to 4 year, BA/BS Question - bawhitsett - 09-25-2011 cookderosa Wrote:In an articulation agreement, the 4 year school accepts the entire AA/AS as a "block" of credit meeting the first 2 year requirements. When I was completing an ASBA at Tidewater Community College in anticipation of transferring to Old Dominion University for their BSBA program under an articulation agreement, I took several courses and tests, including intro to marketing (course), computer applications (CLEP), etc., that wouldn't transfer to ODU though their contents were identical to ODU's offerings. The articulation agreement transferred me in as a junior, with 60 completed credits on my transcripts, but I still had to retake those credits, either via CLEP (marketing) or through coursework (computer apps), in order to get credit for them at ODU. Transfer to 4 year, BA/BS Question - LaterBloomer - 09-25-2011 That's why, Bawhitset, when planes land at Dulles or National, rather than tell you the local time, pilots direct you to put your watch back 200 years.:roflol: (I'm a Virginian, but SOME things here are VERY backward.) I don't want to be contradictory, but an articulation agreement is a formal written document, and the parameters will be written down and signed by both colleges. This agreement, a contract, that you enter into will outline the rules and restrictions on credit transfer. So, either you were screwed over- and could have (literally) sued them (and won) or you didn't read the fine print (blame your advisor lol). |
