Management Information Systems - Old Rusty Pipe - 03-14-2007

I'm starting my study schedule for this test. I have heard many say that IC is all you need for this particular exam. I'm also an electronics technician so I know my way around computers. I believe this will help as well.

Still I'm debating if I should get the Rudman's guide to Management Infomation System. Has anyone else used this?

If so did it help, hurt, or was pretty useless?

Should I get the study guide? Any help would be appreciated.

IC is all you need, especially with your background.

My experience with the Rudman's guides is that they are useful for honing your test taking skills, but are only slightly useful for actually learning the topic.

Thanks. How long did you take to study for MIS? I'm hoping to bang it out in a week. If I can do Stats in 2 weeks, and Accounting in 3 weeks I'm hoping I can do this one more quickly.

A lot of people said that the Computer Apps and Info Systems CLEP materials were helpful, so be sure to go through those at least once. Smile

If you have been in computers/electronics for awhile, you know all you need to!
I passed with a 61! NO IC or books!!!!
In the words of Rob Schneider: "YOU CAN DOOOO EEEEET!!!"

I have heard people recommend that I go through the Computer App and Information Systems material. My plan for that is to take the Peterson practice tests. I get them for free through the Navy anyways. If I am scoring at least 65% on it, then I'm just going to skip over that portion of my plan and move into MIS.

I haven't even cracked the MIS section of IC open yet. I'm hoping most of it just comes naturally. I would just go in and take it, but at this point I am locked into taking MIS, Macroeconomics, and Microeconomics if I want to graduate in July. I can't wait for a retest, and I don't have the time to take the class.

This is part of the reason I'm dreading MIS so much. With Macro and Micro I have Peterson practice tests to tell me exactly when I'm ready. But MIS is similar to Stats in the sense that I have no good practice test to tell me when I'm ready. I suppose I'll be nervous about this DSST until I pass it.

Sat this exam last week. I would say that a good third of the exam came straight out of the Comp Apps & Information Systems flashcards, not the MIS flashcards. Because of your experience/background, I think that your idea to just go ahead and take a practice test for the CLEP exam is a great idea. If you do well, go ahead and go on.

Quite a few questions revolved around the following:
Understanding DSS, ESS, GDSS, etc.
Knowing different approaches for system building (and implementation): traditional (waterfall) prototyping, etc. and which would be the best choice based on company needs and environment.
Knowing the different categories of workers and the type of work they do, eg. knowledge workers.

Since there wasn't a practice test available, I picked up a used textbook for about $2 at the local thrift store and used the practice questions at the end of the chapters for review. If you can't find one local, Amazon usually has some used texts for not too bad a price. Again, with your experience you will probably do well without a text, but it could be a way to have more peace of mind before going in.

Hope this is a little help. I know how it is to really need a test to go well.

Great feedback, thank you! Smile

I never realized how much of my job I've actually picked up, and I've only been doing it about 2 years. I blew through the first two sections of MIS with little difficulty. I think that given my background I am going to find this one relatively easy. I'm going to give it a week and probably take the test.

Well, I've gone and scheduled this exam for next Wednesday. Its going to be the computer based version as well, so I'll have instant scoring. I've taken a Petersons practice exam for the CLEP Information Systems and Computer Applications. I scored an 80%. My semester just ended so my plan is to go ahead and hit MIS up hard over the next 4 or 5 days.

I haven't been able to find any resources for this one aside from IC and the official study guide. Does anyone have any additional resources that I could utilize? I understand that its probably not needed, but I'd like another format aside form IC.

Otherwise, I'll post my score on Wednesday.
