I have to write a letter... - Elinor - 04-06-2011

Since I'm 20, and I want to apply at TESC (and have already tried), I now have to write a letter "outlining why I believe I would be a good candidate" and send scans of all my unofficial transcripts. My question is what does a letter like that look like? What all should it include? I've not really had to write anything like this before, or at least, not in a long time. Also, do I need to send scans of the certificates of completion for the FEMAs? I mean, are they the unofficial transcripts for FEMAs?

Thanks!

FEMA has their own transcripts that you can send. I would not send copies of your FEMA certificates. Just go on FEMA's website down load the transcript request mail it in and have it sent to TESC.

In the past 2 years I already had to write 3 such letters...basically say that you/your family value education...they wanna know that you'll continue and won't stop in the middle. This may sound weird, but I don't know what TESC is so I don't know if that's what they wanna hear, but that's what my HS principal told me to write for college application and I wrote the same for graduate school (and got accepted to NYU and LIU). Add in some of your traits (personality) that makes you a good candidate for their school. I attached my personal statement...Hope this helps.

I have to write a letter... - FinancialWorld - 04-06-2011

I second what purpleteen said.

I'm also 20 and had to write one of these to TESC back in December. Since you already have a lot of credits, use them as leverage. I had around 90 credits at the time. The more credits you have the better your chance is of getting in (at least at TESC). If they turn you down (usually unlikely, but always possible), just take some more tests and reapply in a few weeks.

I know what alleycat is saying, but that is for the official transcripts. When you send all of your transcripts, use the You can use the emailed certificates from FEMA as you unofficial transcripts.

Scan the unofficial copies of your CLEPs/DSSTs (the copy you get when you finish the test), and attach them to the email. I just wrote the letter and then added the transcripts as attachments. I had something like 42 attachments on that email Confusedmilelol: . It's probably the largest email that I've ever sent.

You don't have to send a lot of time on the letter. Show the amount of credits that you have and how much you are dedicated to furthering your education. Highlight how TESC will help you reach your educational goals (pump up the place Big Grin ).

You'll do fine.

Here is a copy of what I sent...

Dear Mr. David Hoftiezer,
Director of Admissions
Thomas Edison State College

My name is FinancialWorld (Changed). I’m seeking a waiver of policy concerning my application for admission into Thomas Edison State College. I am 20 years old.

I would be an excellent candidate for TESC because of my unwavering dedication to academic excellence. I have completed my high school requirements and have earned over 90 credits through CLEPs, DSSTs, and FEMA courses. My commitment and self motivation have allowed me to achieve these goals in a relatively short period of time. I would greatly appreciate it if you would consider me for admission into TESC.

I have attached my unofficial transcripts for your convenience. If you need clarification on anything, I am more than happy to supply you with the information needed.

Sincerely,
FinancialWorld

Wow ok...that's way shorter than what I had to write. I needed more than a page. Lucky you Smile

*groan* I need to get started on this today as well. I hate using the scanner, it's so slow.... I am requesting official transcripts from my CC, do you think in the meantime, for the purposes of the letter, it would be alright to take a screen capture of my grades online?

Grrrr, stupid age requirements. :toetap:

Thanks so much, y'all! This helps a lot!

For waiver of the age requirement at TESC, you just need to write a short letter explaining why they should admit you even though you are younger than 21. A letter like the one FinancialWorld posted is sufficient. Be sure to mention how many credits you have already. I do not know about the unofficial transcripts because I had already had my CLEP and DSST scores sent to TESC. Because I was 16 at the time, I had to confirm that I had graduated high school, but since you are over 18, that should not be an issue.

Since you are close to 21 and have many credits you should be fine. I was 16 and had 42 credits when I applied to TESC and was accepted, so you should not have any problem.

Dang....I wish could have had that many credits at that age. What made you start at that age?

Maybe with enough encouragement and guidance, I could have started when I was 15 or so. (encouraging note to self: Push on with all your might!).
