My 5 yr old attends a local Montessori school and I am very pleased with his progress. At first I was a little put off when he would bring home subtraction, addition, multiplication and division problems. All I remembered back in kindergarten was learning my numbers and letters, and that was that! I was afraid that they were forcing these kids to learn too much too soon so I requested a conference. After spending a day in his class and observing how they were taught, I was very impressed. They use beads,rods, little bricks or whatever they call them to help them calculate. It's quite interesting and instead of memorizing multiplication tables, etc ...they are learning their numbers and math concepts by touching and feeling these manipulatives. I wish I had been taught math like that. I still remember my first grade teacher hitting my hand with a ruler for counting with my fingers!
Anyways, to get to the funny story....it seems my son is now learning the decimal system.
I asked him what he did in school on Fri. His answer- " An evil alien in my class is making me learn the decimal system. If I don't learn it, he buries me underneath beads and bricks!"

Why would you be worried you kid is learning "too much too soon" ???
If i ever have kids the little brats better have read at least half of "War and Peace" before 1st grade. I'm not unreasonable, not the whole thing, just half.

Very cute story! I might add that you've now prompted me to read up on Montessori. Too late for my older kids, but I have a one and a three year old and it sounds interesting.

Why? Because alot of the time it's about memorization, not learning.
I used to work as a school nurse where the prinicipal would boast that all the kindergarteners knew their multiplication tables.
Memorized them? Yes.
Know what a simple concept such as more or less meant- no.
I used to be one of those kids. I had the multiplication table memorized but really understanding what it meant, no, and it hurt me later.
One of my sister's is already bragging about how her daughter memorized her multiplication tables and she' s only 5. Ok...so my son doesn't have his memorized but he can figure out i.e. 4x4 without any problems. He can explain exactly WHY 4x4 = 16. To me that' s just as important, if not more, than memorizing that it is 16.
Oh and Burbuja you should look up the founders of Amazon and Google. They all went to Montessori.

The Montessori method has been around for quite some time now. My son attended this more than 25 years ago. The important thing is that they let the kids progress at their own pace, and they are learning what today is referred to as critical thinking skills. Much more important than memorizing.

Little disappointed... I read about Montessori and it looks interesting, so I searched for schools near my house. The good news is that there are two within driving distance. The bad news is that they both have horrible reviews...
Hmmm.. I'll have to do a little bit more research. My three year old is really smart and I would like to do something that challenges him.

You have to be careful with Montessori. Some are just Montessori in name only and not the method.
There is a Montessori closer to my house but I did not like that one at all. They used some of the Montessori material but aside from that, same as all the other schools I checked out for my son. The philosophy of Montessori just wasn't there. Another Montessori that was close seemed perfect but too expensive.
The school my son attends is much farther but Montessori in every way and much cheaper!
