My son's academic evaluation came through. Questions. . . - JenninMN - 02-15-2011 My son's academic evaluation came through today. I've added his current classes and planned CLEPs with ***. I have one question. TESC required Public Speaking for the Communication degree, but put it under his COMM requirements instead. Is this just a matter of calling and bringing it to their attention? I'm very pleased with this. I thought he needed COMP 2, but they counted his CC class as COMP 2, so he can do the College Comp Modular for the other class. I'll get him working on the 3 CLEPs he needs ASAP. That just leaves his internship this summer. Anyway, how does this look? S.H. S.H. Applied S.H. Questions. . . - cookderosa - 02-15-2011 I'm a little out of my element looking at a communication degree, so bear with me on that. But, I think there might be some errors in the gen eds- so since you mentioned an error with speech, you should call. Here's what I'd check on for sure: These two are listed as a humanities-I noticed they assigned his other 3 MMVP classes a COM dept number too and calling them "gen ed electives." Just confirm. I'd hate to see all of those demoted to free electives later with an "oops, we missed that these were media." When I checked Hennepin's web site, those are ALL from an AAS department- which is usually automatically NOT a liberal arts credit. Double check and be sure to prompt them by saying they were from an AAS department, because seriously, when he applies for graduation they WILL check- and that's not when you want to find a deficiency of credit...especially if your yearly fee is due. MMVP1511 Production Planning...... 4.00 A COM-199 *CC *TE MMVP1516 Digital Media Technology. 2.00 A COM-199 *CC *TE *and, if they are wrong, you at least can use the other 3 credits from A&I Lit which they put in your "free elective" area. (?!) Part 2: you have planned in classes/tests as free electives. There is nothing wrong with this, but you should know FEMA credits are 100% free. Zero cost, so you might want to consider saving a few dollars in that section. By my math, you'd save at least $800 over the way it's written. If, the communication/media credits get demoted, these will be filled by the MMVP credits and it will be humanities that he'll have to complete - so I'd hold off on the tests you have there just until you get confirmation. I'd be interested to hear how this goes ![]() My son's academic evaluation came through. Questions. . . - JenninMN - 02-16-2011 Thank you! I was surprised at where they put some of those COMM credits as well. We'll get on it. He's currently taking Ethics, so that should finish his Humanities requirements if we get Analyzing Lit where it's supposed to be. He's attending HTC through our states Post Secondary Enrollment Option, which means that those classes are free! So we'll just need to pay for 3 CLEPS and the summer internship. I'm really pleased with the internship option, so I'm not complaining about that one. Thanks for the heads-up about the free courses though. He's very excited to be just about done. And we're all nervous about what he's going to do next in the "real world." :o Jennifer My son's academic evaluation came through. Questions. . . - cookderosa - 02-16-2011 JenninMN Wrote:Thank you! He's currently taking Ethics, so that should finish his Humanities requirements if we get Analyzing Lit where it's supposed to be. The heads up is that they are taught through HTC's Media department. The difference is that they are NOT taught through HTC's English department. If I had a dollar, I'd put it against him being allowed to use those classes as humanities credits. I seriously caution you to find out asap before taking any more tests or classes, unless you don't care about them counting toward the degree. It's seriously nothing to do withe them being free- it's everything to do with they TYPE of credit they are. All community colleges have 3 types of credit. 1) Non-credit/professional development/adult ed/continuing ed. 2) Transfer credit (classes taught through liberal arts departments and always transfer to other colleges. Ex. English, Math, Communication, History, Psychology, Art, etc. These courses/programs lead to degrees called AA or AS. 3) Applied Technology credit. These are taught through departments that offer degrees but are not part of the transfer credit world. These credits are legit, they are regionally accredited, and they are "credit" but they are considered terminal credits- meaning they don't go outside that specific degree. Ex. Media, Drafting, Ecology, Nursing, HVAC, anything with "Tech" in the title, etc. These courses/programs lead to: certificates, diplomas, and degrees called AAS or AOS. So in your son's case, his media credits are coming from this source (#3). Credit from here, never goes into the transfer credit category. Different faculty & different accreditation rules make it true- not the college. So, it's not your son's tech college that decides this, and it isn't TESC that decides it. TESC has had a lot of bad/wrong advice spewing from their advising dept lately, there must be a newb on board. My son's academic evaluation came through. Questions. . . - JenninMN - 02-16-2011 Hmm, I'm a little befuddled. . .Are you saying that not only should his MMVP courses not count toward the humanities credits, they shouldn't count toward a TESC degree at all? Jennifer My son's academic evaluation came through. Questions. . . - alleycat - 02-16-2011 I have had Humanities credits award for Interior Design classes. They went under art. I have an AASID in ID. My son's academic evaluation came through. Questions. . . - JenninMN - 02-18-2011 Well I contacted TESC and pointed out that these are AAS and not AS courses. They said that they double checked the transcripts, and they all count. They kept the 2 courses under Humanities. And they said that Public Speaking does not count as Fundamentals of Speech, so he's going to need one more class. I think he'll just take Mass Comm from them, so there aren't any questions about it. Then you are all set! That's wonderful news! (to answer your prior question, even if they wouldn't have counted as humanities, they would have counted as free electives- but since you specificially asked them a direct question about the AAS credit, he should be good to go!) |
