Take CLEP to better a poor grade? - redheadsrule - 02-04-2011

Silly question - I had a horrible spring semester last year :nopity: and passed english 101 with a 1.something and got a NC in my math. I really don't want to retake a whole semester for either subject, and funny thing - I am good at both, ust crappy timing with life stuff.

Can I take the CLEP Eng w/comp to better the C- and Math for the NC or no, since I received a form of credit?

Thanks a ton!

If you took the course with the college you plan on graduating from, odds are no because they won't accept test that you have already taken a class for (most places don't).

It might be possible if you plan on transferring to just have the college exclude the course from the transcript and then the test will count. Other people will know more about this than I do, though.

As Kyle said, it depends.

I dropped UExcel Psychology and Calculus from my transcript when matriculating with EC as they were both B's. They would have affected my GPA but wouldn't have added any credit value due to being replaced with other tests.

There was a one month window of opportunity to do this after matriculating with EC. What's your school's policy?

Kyle is right. My suggestion, if these are the only 2 classes on your transcript at this school (not clep, actual classes) then I'd say walk away and never look back. When you go to college B, either take the classes or CLEPs.
For the record, TESC has no such policy, but like I said, Kyle is right and MOST of your colleges absolutely do NOT allow you to CLEP a class you have already taken. In any event, that's 2 ideas.

No one can tell you and be 100% sure as each college is different and has it's own policies. However, as was said above, I really doubt it....

Call you school and ask them though.

Generally speaking, CLEP will not replace a low grade.

There is a special exception in Texas. If you have low grades from courses taken more than 10 years ago, you can invoke Texas Academic Fresh Start. To qualify, you must be applying for admission at a public college or university in Texas. You invoke Fresh Start when you apply. All of your credits and grades more than 10 years old are nullified. It's all or nothing. You can't pick and chose which courses you want to eliminate. All courses more than 10 years old go away.

If you no longer have credit for a course, it seems reasonable to assume that you could then receive CLEP credit for a course taken more than 10 years ago. You should check with the school to see if you would be allowed to actually do this.

Thanks for the answers and ideas. I am heading to Evergreen tomorrow for the campus tour and to meet an advisor. I will ask what the policy is for them for sure. The nice part about Evergreen is I have heard, and hope to confirm, a good chunk of the CLEPs are worth 8 credits (I know!), not just five or three. I believe there is a limit of only five tests I can take, but that 40 credits would be worth it.

I did have the ten years+ thing on a few fallen grades, but I have since retaken a few and did well. I just f'd myself last spring on two essential classes.

Cool, I will reread what you all posted, take some notes, and take them to school tomorrow. I appreciate all your help on this forum and happy to meet you!

:hurray:
