GPA / CLEP Question - GlennOwns - 01-29-2011

How do I get/maintain a 4.0 GPA?

I am currently enrolled in Intro to Speech (current grade=94).
I have earned about 40 Credits toward my Associate's Degree (all non-graded and doesn't affect my GPA).
So this intro speech class would be my only graded course (3 SH).

My question is, will I have "earned my Associate's Degree with a 4.0 GPA" if I have only 1 class (speech) counting towards it?

It seems to me like there should be rules on this because all of my CLEPs are non-graded/weighted; they just provide me cheap/fast credits!

Thanks in advance,
Glenn

Hi Glenn,

I get where you are coming from and the answer is 'it depends' with a heavy pinch of common sense.

On the one hand, if you only take one grade-bearing exam/course and get an A, strictly-speaking that's a 4.0 GPA. However, it would be a silly person who tries to pass that off as a degree-wide GPA. Common sense applies; since your GPA is on your transcript, any person or process which needed to verify that GPA would see your entire transcript. The result would be potentially embarrassing and call your credibility into question if you had represented the paper GPA as something other than the result of a single course. Also, if you're looking to go into grad school, any admissions board is going to deal with it appropriately.

Hope that answers your question.
