Devry education - johnmcschool - 09-02-2010 I am new to this site so will try and make my question clear. I am looking at going to Devry for the Bachelors in Biomedical Engineering Technoloby degree, it is ABET accredited at the site. I have over 12 years of design and development experience in my field and am a project engineer. I am looking for a degree to get to the next level. What are thought on this school for someone who is not a first job type of person. Any insight would be appreciated. John Devry education - MISin08 - 09-02-2010 Welcome to the forum! I don't know your field so I don't know if this degree is a "next-level" degree given your experience, or more the "catch-up" degree leading to a master's. Hopefully others with more experience will respond on that point. If not, you might try on degreeinfo. As to DeVry, I had an employee who took their MBA and from what I could see it was rigorous and she got her money's worth. Phillip Devry education - rickyjo - 09-05-2010 A lot of folks here will likely suggest that if cost is a significant issue most of the popular for-profit schools will prove less efficient with your money. Devry appears to be quite expensive, it looks like it's about $36,000 for an associates and about $67,000 for a bachelors. My source isn't perfect but it sounds about right for a for-profit school. (source: What is the Cost of a DeVry University Online Degree?). If you can use other resources like CLEP or ALEKS you can greatly diminish your cost. Some people here are getting bachelors degrees for under $5,000 by testing out of the majority of their work. There have been a few instances were Devry has been accused of bad business practices and even settled with partial tuition refunds in one case. Now that said, I don't think there is anything really wrong with Devry or any other accredited university; however, I do believe you can get more bang for your buck elsewhere without some of the negative stigma that Devry, UoP and others have surrounding them. Best of luck! Devry education - TMW2010 - 09-05-2010 I had checked out engineering technology degrees when I first was looking at finishing up my bachelors. The point of the the engi tech degrees seem to position the holder as a go-between for engineers and the people who are working to make what the engineers design. Doesn't seem to have quite a lot of upward mobility to it, and there's no real grad level for it, if you wanted to go further with education. And as Ricky Joe stated, DeVry is expensive. I could see spending 30-50k+ on an actual engineering degree, but on a engi tech degree? I'd check around a little more, because you can find those (at least at associate level) for a whole lot less cost. If you've got a place paying for it? I, personally, would still look for a better deal costwise. For example, EC offers the following - Bachelor Degrees in Technology Bachelor of Science, Electronics Engineering Technology *** Bachelor of Science, Information Technology * Bachelor of Science, Nuclear Engineering Technology *** Bachelor in Professional Studies in Technology Management Bachelor of Science, Technology with Specialty** * Excelsior College awards credit for many IT certification examinations, including but not limited to Microsoft®, Cisco®, CompTIA®, Oracle®, SAS®, and Sun MicrosystemsSM. ** Designed to capitalize on the formal training of U.S. Military personnel. Effective September 1, 2010, specialties will become areas of focus. ***Accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET, 111 Market Place, Suite 1050, Baltimore, MD 21202-4012 - telephone 410 - 347-7700. Even though they're ~$320/credit it, if you took the whole degree through them, they're $39800 for the full degree. With a partnership enrollment, the degree, if all classes are taken through them is $33000, but a huge chunk of that can be filled by CLEPs, DSSTs, and the like. For example, if you earn 60 credits (1/2 of the degree) through CLEPs et al., you're looking at $17k v. $67k for the degree... While I realize that EC doesn't have the Biomed Engi Tech that you were looking for, I was just using them as an example. In your situation, I'd also point to the Bachelor in Professional Studies in Technology Management that EC offers. That may do you well, too... Good luck! |
