What do DSST Scores Mean? - bushidoforgotten - 08-21-2010

I recently took the Ethics in America test and scored a 458 (minimum passing score being 400). I know that for CLEP and other exams, they use mean scores and standard deviation to determine two digit scores, which tell a student about how much of the populace they outscored.

So my question for DSST is 458 out of what? And how does this translate to how many I missed or what percentile I fell within? I am happy that I passed, but I am curious to know by how much...

The maximum is 500. I can't remember exactly how it works but there is a post explaining this somewhere . . .

Welcome to the forum!

I thought this article about DSST and CLEP scoring, which was originally posted by gofastinc, was very interesting.

DSST is saying that the new refreshed exams are being scored similarly to CLEP, and the old non-refreshed exams are not. Instead of comparing test-takers to each other to determine the passing score (old non-refreshed DSST exams), they are both (new DSST and CLEP) setting a certain number/percentage of questions correct as the passing score.

I also thought this was good to have for reference:

Wow. That's really interesting! Particularly the percentages needed to pass and then in the second document the "B" level scores. I'm kind of surprised that the "B" level is that low. I always just assumed that a B would be higher. That's pretty cool info. Thanks for posting it!

You're welcome!

It seemed like a good thread to post it in again.

What college would be requesting a B-conversion score.

I know of 2 colleges that actually give grades for some proficiency tests; there may be more.

Excelsior College awards grades for some DSSTs (2 digit score, non-refreshed versions). Check the Student Guide to Credit by exam for details.

Kansas State University gives grades for some CLEPs:

Since these exams are usually pass/fail, mostly the "grading" question is just curiosity. "How did I do on the test compared to students who took the course and the test?"
