How much time do you spend studying/prepping for CLEP? - ods2000 - 07-28-2010

Just wondering how much time everyone spends on studying before going in and taking the CLEP.

I'm sure it's different for every course but what is your routine and how long until you actually went in to take the test? Thanks

For me, it usually takes a total of 4 weeks. This is 2-3 weeks to go through all of the study materials, and 1-2 weeks to work through the practice exams. It is a long time compared to many, but it helps that I am interested in the topics I have chosen so far. I have been pleased with my results.

I think my normal is 3 weeks or so, but that doesn't include the time I spent in high school learning those subjects. All of the three weeks consists of reviewing the sample tests an studying for what I got wrong.

I usually spend about 1-2 weeks reviewing the flash cards, doing practice exams and studying the recommended resourses in the specific exam feedback or that I locate on my own. I'm like a 100 years old so I have a lot of knowledge to build on, but I have found that even with this limited studying I'm retaining and learning a lot. I have used some of this info at work and surprised myself that I remembered it and used it in the right context. I do commit usually about 4-6 hours per day, everyday during that process so I'm pretty immersed in it that entire time. Some exams were faster becuase I knew the content already so maybe I just studied a few days, but most were this long. I'm sure I could have higher scores if I spent more time, but with 2 kids at home and working a full time teaching job and 2 adjunct jobs I didn't have more time. Just find the pace that works best for you and run with it. You will know it after a few exams. Good luck!

I usually take one month to study, about 2 -3 hours in the evening after work and a little more on the weekend. This seems to work for me. But I can only comfortably study for 1 subject at a time, so I take 1 CLEP at a time.

2 - 3 days.

I'm planning on taking my first CLEP test on Friday, so I'm too inexperienced to really say, but I'm guessing that about one test a month will work for me. Some of it will likely depend on how easy a test is and whether or not I actually care about learning the material. That will differ from test to test.

Study Time: How I Did It…

Pre-Study-Prep: Obtain or set up whatever materials I will need to study (IC Flashcards, REA Books, Standard Deviants Videos, Pass-Your-Class Guides, and Petersons Practice Exams.

Week One: Begin to read books, review flashcards, watch videos. Call your test center and make an appointment in advance as they sometimes require a few weeks advance notice)

Week Two: Re-read books, review flashcards, watch videos Take 1-2 practice exams

Week Three: Continue to review all materials, take additional/final practice exams. You should be passing these with room to spare. Take real exam at end of the week and PASS.

Note you should have at this point already acquired pre-study-prep materials for your next exam so as not to waste time.

For most cleps and dssts, I take aprox. a week. Two weeks for harder cleps/dssts and ECEs.

When I was testing, I would do three tests a month, one week apart. Towards the end when I had a few whoppers to take, I spaced them every two weeks.

Granted, I only work part-time, so I had more study time than some people do. If you're working full time, I'd say give yourself about two weeks per test.

Oh, and my favorite trick was to schedule a couple months work of tests ahead of time. Then I didn't have the option to put them off. I mean, yeah, I could have called and cancelled if I absolutely had to, but the deadline made me much more motivated to study.
