CLEP Eng Comp w/essay bomb (???) - betch - 07-05-2010

This one was by far the easiest test I've taken. I breezed through the multiple choice, typed my essay and was out of there in no more than 35 minutes.
I had taken a couple of pretests prior and had no trouble at all, grammar and spelling are a strong suit. I was raised without TV, so reading was my childhood!
Just got my results back, complete hardcore fail (47).
Is it possible that my essay did not go through? That's the only explanation I can think of, as I'm sure I aced the multiple choice...?? Completely bewildered. I would've bet my house walking out of the test center that I had well better than a 60 score.
I wish I could remember how the test ended, I keep wondering if there was a button I was supposed to hit to save the essay or something that I didn't do..I know I flew through it, maybe I missed something..ugh. I emailed collegeboard to see if there's anything that can be looked at but no response as of yet...

Ya, that sounds like something went wrong. You could call them if you don't want to wait for an email response.

I hope Collegeboard sorts this out quickly for you. If it cannot be challenged, can you take the new modular version right away? That is, can you forgo the 6 month retake period as it is a different test/structure?

Either way I hope things work out for you. Do keep us posted.

Well, they told me to suck eggs. Said they do not give out scores and unless there was a reported problem with the testing equipment, which there was not, then the exam is considered complete and accurate.
I pressed and kept asking, "Can you just tell me if the essay score was zero, meaning it would have been blank" and they said all they can tell me is that the essay portion was submitted and scored per their protocols. A blank essay is an automatic zero and they won't tell me if that were the case.

I can take the College Comp to replace it, but now I'm out the fees, the time, and now I have to hope COSC will let me drop the Fail, because LSDAS counts Fs on pass fail classes towards GPA and that will drop me from a 4.0 to a 2.67 and I'll be a leper applying for law school with that kind of GPA, regardless of LSAT score!

But you won't have an F because it won't ever make it to your transcript. I don't think LSDAS will see this.
See, when you/College Board submits this grade to COSC, they will look at that grade and say "no, this doesn't count" and deny the credit. It's unlike a fail for failing a class. Also, I believe that the College Board gives you 100% control on which exams to send on an official transcript. I have a fail in my past too (DSST, Civil War) and I NEVER include it on my score reports. Poof. Never happened.

IF COSC includes this I'd be shocked, but update us and let us know.

Oh I so hope you are right. At the least it gives me reason to be optimistic! My assumption was that since the scores are sent directly to COSC (not selectively transferred as when you first enroll) they'd automatically count. That would be fantastic if the case is otherwise! I wont know for sure for another couple weeks though as my academic advisor is not available to me until they finish my credit evaluation (which is ongoing).

Sorry to hear about your fail Sad If you have the time to take it again, I'm sure you will nail it! Also, have no fear, it would be unfathomable if the fail ended up effecting your GPA. A pass doesn't help your GPA nor does a fail hurt. If you pass, your college will, in effect, waive credits off of your degree requirement because, in their opinion, you have successfully demonstrated that you do not need to take the course. Failing is not like failing a course, it just means that you still need to find a way to get your credits.

Here is something in your posts that I think may help us figure out the root of the issue:
Quote:I breezed through the multiple choice, typed my essay and was out of there in no more than 35 minutes.
I don't understand why you would jet out of there instead of double, triple and quadruple check everything with so much time left!!! You only failed by three points. Even if there was an issue with the essay, it looks like you could have passed anyway had you correctly answered just a handful more of questions.
Quote:grammar and spelling are a strong suit.
I'm not doing this to make fun of you, I want to demonstrate something. On an internet forum, posts are usually typed impromptu and rather speedily. The result, while not at all inappropriate for the setting, ends up looking like:
Quote:I had taken a couple of pretests prior
"Prior" is an adjective, not an adverb.
Quote:I had well better than
Both well and better are inflected forms of the word "good," (well as an adverb and better as a comparative) and can not be used together like this. "Much", an adjective, can be used here instead of "well," or "higher" another comparative can be used in place of "better."
Quote:I emailed collegeboard to see if there's anything
Maybe I'm a nit-picking traditionalist but this is in the present tense indicative mood, whereas it should be in the past subjunctive mood.

I'm sure that when you have adequate time to prepare a paper, your grammar is superb, but I can't help but to think that you rushed yourself too much and missed at least a few little details like you did in your posts (as I always do in mine, including this one :p). It makes no difference on an internet forum, but if even a few little things like that creeped into your essay, a college professor absolutely would notice it and it may have effected, oops I mean affected your score Wink

Ha, point taken. The essay was the one thing I did re-read, although it was more of a cursory look for spelling, structure and basic grammar. I'm open to the idea that I truly failed, but still bewildered!
It was my third test of the day, after American Lit and Eng Lit and no breaks in between (the proctor at COSC will let you take your next test as soon as you finish one). I suppose my preconcieved notion that this was the mindless/easy one could have been my downfall!
Well it definitely looks like it is not going to affect my gpa/transcript, so at least I have that. Puts me behind 6cr off my pace, but I'll make it up. Onward and upward!

"Onward and Upward" The only way to go. Just do the other English Exam.
